Akron lost to Valpo
Zeke Marshall fouled out with ZERO points and ZERO rebounds. Valpo attempted 30 more FT than Akron. Valpo was 0-14 from the 3 pt line.

Yikes, Akron must SUCK. 03-lmfao

Watched the game. Did not look like the same team that beat MSU. Akron really did play dumb. All teams are capable of that on a given night. Akron is not as good as I thought. Not so worried now.

Danny - Valpo shot 38 free throws and the Zips 7. Sounds like our good friends in stripes from the Horizon League back up to their old tricks again. =)

Yeah. Saw the box score. I would say that would be the difference, but Valpo missed a lot of FT and didn't make a single 3. All I can say is from looking at the box score, I am not impressed with Akron. That being said, when people play us it is like playing the Green Bay Packers. When people play us, we get their best shot. It's like the their Super Bowl.

RE: Akron lost to Valpo
I watched their first half against Hiram last weekend and it's a typical Keith Dambrot-coached team. Maybe slightly more athletic than last year's team but also not quite as physical. McClanahan has had a slow start to the year but I still think they will be in the thick of the MAC East race.

I wouldn't see this happening again. Like I say every year, we lost to YSU in the same season we went to the Elite 8.

RE: Akron lost to Valpo
This year's Akron team is in no way comparable to the 2002 KSU team. Akron's problem is that while they have talent out front, they lack seasoned leadership. They have some very immature players. Their most mature player plays down low and can't really lead from that position in pressure possessions.

They will get these performances from Marshall, too. He will be great at times and he will disappear. That isn't going to change. He doesn't have the personality or B-ball IQ to dominate consistently. Essentially, he is a role player who can give you some all-conference minutes, and will hurt you at other times.

Expect more of the foul discrepancy you saw last night. They reach, grab, and hack a lot. Among the better teams in the MAC, they will rack up more fouls. They barrel down the lane hoping for calls. When it goes their way, life is good. When refs call it close, the opponent will get to the line a lot, like last night. They were lucky Valpo shot poorly from the line. Akron fouled a lot last night. I'm sure their fans will say, "look at the foul discrepancy!" Valpo fans will say, "That team sure hacked a lot."

Interesting. Not going to comment much, because we’ll have a game or two that makes us shake out heads.

I'm not trying to compare our 2002 team to Akron or any MAC team in history. That team could beat every team in the MAC to this date. However, I'm saying that our best team lost to a bad YSU team, so why wouldn't an overrated MAC team in 2011 lose to Valpo.

Like I said, I don't see this happening again, based on simply seeing boxed scores and a 3 point loss.

RE: Akron lost to Valpo
I agree, Alpha. There is increasing parity in college basketball. And especially, there aren't many outcomes between Horizon and MAC teams that should shock anyone. Akron's win vs. MSU was a bit more surprising than their loss to a mid-pack Horizon team, but either outcome is not shocking. Most nights, Akron would lose to MSU and beat Valpo, so they are about where they should be right now.

It will be interesting to see their CSU and WVU games.

This is going to be a very intriguing season.

RE: Akron lost to Valpo
These are the only MAC games that I think can help draw conclusions about any team in the conference so far...

Texas Southern 66
EMU 49
*despite a few changes, the Eagles are likely a bottom of the barrel MAC team. I am glad this is a road game for Kent State b/c I don't think it will matter.

Iowa 88
NIU 55
Giving up 88 is one thing, losing by 33 is another when you have teams like Kent St., Akron and (beating Dayton is enough to put them on the radar) Miami grabbing big wins early in the season.

Texas St. 94
Toledo 91
*If Texas State is scoring 94 points against the Rockets.....

Otherwise I don't think there is an OOC game that has been played so far that you can point to and make a conclusion about any MAC team...well, unless you want to count Akron's win over Mississippi State....and the win over West Va of course.

RE: Akron lost to Valpo
I watched the last 10 minutes of this game. I have to admit I found myself yelling at the refs a few times. I didn't know the FT discrepancy was so large but from what I saw I can't say I'm surprised.

Akron has themselves to blame too. They had the ball with about 40 seconds to go down two and they didn't even run a play. They had Quincy Diggs dribble the clock out up top fake a couple drives then hoist a deep three. It reminded me of how the Cavs ended games when Lebron was there, everyone clear out and let's play one on one.

RE: Akron lost to Valpo
I think most good MAC teams will lose to good Horizon League teams on the road. They are a better league most years so beating them on the road will never be easy. I have a strong feeling that Akron, CSU and KSU won't be as proud of beating Miss St, Vanderbilt and WV at the end of the season as they are now. Time will tell.

RE: Akron lost to Valpo
Vandy's best player did not play in CSU game. That win will be good for CSU as RPI doesn't factor that. Vandy will be very good this season, IMHO. That will make a winover CSU good too. MSU looked good in beating Arizona last night. Their loss to Akron seems to have woken them up. WVU is not good right now, but as a very young team should evolve. I never underestimate Huggins ability to get the most out his teams by March. There is a reason he is a Hall of Fame coach and it ain't his personality.
