RE: CMU game thread
Win next week - and let's see how EMU does. They have a good shot at NIU if they can get weather in their favor, but stopping the NIU offense is not easy. We smoked EMU and CMU and CMU beat NIU - so it just stands to reason that the directional Michigan schools we beat handily can beat NIU.... I'll go with that.

If we get to 8-4, it is really a 9-3 and we really should have beaten both OSU and NIU. The only definitive loss we had all season was to Boise State - so I'm confused as to why everyone is calling for Beckman's scalp. We see more potential out there and the defense has been a disappointment against a number of MAC opponents, but look at the records in the MAC. Look at where we were just a few years ago. A lot of progress - and we can keep building on it.

We need a really good running back or two to commit to us. I'm not sure about DF being our feature back next year. He is a lot like Parmalee was - just seems to be 1/2 step from breaking long runs off, but that extra 1/2 step needs to be there.

The official announces the call and says "replay 3rd down." Then they spot the ball...seemingly at the spot of the hold and called it 1st and 10?

Shouldn't that have been 3rd and like 7 or 8 with the 10 yard mark-off? I know the play gained about 20+ yards but the 10 yards gets marked off from the spot the foul doesn't it?

The announcers didn't say a word and I can't believe no one on the Central sidelines was going nuts. And that was a key play in the first half as Toledo went on to score on that drive.

They showed the hold on replay and it appeared to be about a yard or so past the LOS (looked like) and then gave us the first down. Very strange call. I'm not much on calling out refs but last night was poor and, IMO, often favoring UT. We did get a kind of cheesy facemask that hurt (Looked like the guy went over the rop ofthe helmet and jsut slid past the facemask) but some of the other calls in our favor were spurious.

FWIW, this is the play for per the box score.

3rd and 1 at TOL 43 Adonis Thomas rush for 14 yards to the Toledo 47, TOLEDO penalty 10 yard Holding accepted for a 1ST down.

And this seems to indicate that the holding yardage was marked off from the end of the run...which is not what I thought the rule was as the reason he gained the 14 yards was becasue of the hold in the first place!

Quote:PENALTY—10 yards from the basic spot (Exception: Offensive team holding fouls behind the neutral zone are enforced from the previous spot. Safety if the foul occurs behind Team A’s goal line)

If the hold was 10 yards past the first down marker, it's still a first down. That's how I'm reading that.

That's the whole problem. It happened just beyond the line of scrimmage at about mid field.

RB's Remy and Jones-Moore are good. Just have to hold on to them.
I think Rockets will get one more.

One success story this season is the arrival of Detmer as a field goal kicker. He seems automatic on the long ones--something we have not had in lots of seasons. Plenty of poise for a freshman. Congrats to him for a job well done.

He's really stepped up as a Freshman and been great splitting time with
Casano.

I agree wholeheartedly. They sucked the big one the entire game.

These kids are not in natural positions because of injury, but doing best they can. They don't want to screw up, but being out of natural spots hopefully gets handled with more recruiting. Next year is Beckmans 1st full year with all his recruits and with some players back hopefully fully recovered (and i think Molls-great player but still not fully healed) and the rest back should make big difference. But how but support and not blasting. These kids want to win. I know we behind NI but they are 13-2 in MAC play in 2 years. Not bad.

cleague40, with a boy on the team you know you have to have extra thick skin. Don't take too much of what you read in the game thread to heart. The fan base may not be huge but, believe me, it is passionate. Even among fans there is a lot of emotion while the action is going down.

Think of it like 'Vegas: What's said in a game thread stays in the game thread.

Fans could maybe realize, the same goes for the players (and coaches). If we can call out a player for a personal foul penalty, seems fair....

Nothing blind about debating plays or even starters and jobs but if we're ever to be "big time" it isn't going to happen for a program our size if we keep publicly getting butt hurt (latest kid slang, lol) because some little thing doesn't go our way. We're either going to be the most legally supportive fan base and enjoy supporting the University's programs through thick or thin or we're going to be middle of the pack MAC forever.

It's just a game being played by kids. If one of us is being a moron because we lost money on a bet or personal ego because a "friend" at work is ribbing us or whatever, that's on us, not the players.

We have/had two running backs that IMO could be exceptional. One was Antwan Gilbert who I thought was the best recruit in last year's class. Now he's at a Michigan JC averaging 8 yards per carry, and who knows if he will ever come back to Toledo. The other is Cassius McDowell who blew out his knee last year, and this season never carried the ball once, although he did catch 2 passes. Whether he ever recovers the incredible speed and cutting ability he had in high school is a big ?

That's the whole problem. It happened just beyond the line of scrimmage at about mid field.

I noticed that one too when it happened and thought they really blew that one. I also remember a play when a CMU player came head on and hit a UT player. No flag for leading with the helmet, and unfortunately the CMU player got hurt on the play. That rule is there not just because they can hurt the offensive player, but also because they can hurt themselves. There was at least one pass interference call they did not call on CMU that they should have, and at least one pass interference call they should have called on Toledo as well. The refs missed a few obvious calls, IMO, on both teams.

On another note, I hate it when the ESPN announcers don't know the rules for the college game. Their great recruiting guru was one of the announcers and he picked on Owens for running out of bounds with about 5 or 6 minutes left in the game, saying he was stopping the clocking. He then continued to show his lack of knowledge by complaining that the clock was still running after he clearly went out of bounds. The other announcer played stupid too. Then later with about 2:30 left in the game Owens fell to the ground in bounds and the announcer was like, "alright, Owens learned his lesson." HELLO, the clock continues to run after the spot on plays out of bounds until the final 2 minutes of each half. Learn the dang rules if you want to get paid by a major network to be a sports broadcaster.

RE: CMU game thread
the only issue i have is I know that we have passionate fans and all will never see eye to eye but we have to be positive. My son on the team doesn't care what anyone thinks except himself and his team. that is family, and me of course. I just think these kids are put in tough positions everyday in life and we have to support them. Mine not playing this year is killing him, but he will get through it and hopefully healthy and stronger for next. Just knoe these kids are playing hard and can only do and play where coaches put them. All in all they have done real wel and alot of younger kids have stepped andgot some great experience. Lets hope they finish strong and lets stay behind them positive.
