Could there be a better term for these boards than "Full Members" and "Basketball Only"? Georgetown has been a FULL member of the conference for 26 years and is not "basketball-only" in any sense. The only NCAA sports it sponsors which do not play in the Big East are football (I-AA), men's lacrosse (ECAC), and field hockey (independent).

BTW, Georgetown broke ground yesterday on its new $22 million football facility. Phase I will be ready to go with the home opener versus Brown on September 17.

The new stadium will only seat 4,500 so I doubt they're considering a move to D1.

Agreed about bb-only and football schools. Obviously Nova and the Hoyas play football, it's just Division 1-AA football.

I try to refer to the 'bb-only' side of the Big East in my posts as the non-Div 1A schools. But that is a lot to type and sometimes I lapse and write bb-only.

Do you have a suggestion for a shorter alternative?

Cheers,
Neil

One suggestion may be to title "I-A Schools" versus "I-AA and Non-Football Schools."

Georegetown has been in Division I since the division was first created by the NCAA. After a number of years at the major college level (with Orange and Sun Bowl appearances in the 1940's and 1950's) it now plays football at the Division I-AA level and is comfortable doing so.

A full time resident student at Uof L pays, what, $5,000 a year? The cost of a year at Georgetown is now $45,850 a year. The cost of funding 85 scholarships plus comparable Title IX grants would approach $8 million a year for a school that awards its aid solely on need.

Only three I-A schools are smaller than Georgetown: Rice, Wake Forest, and Tulsa. And with only 3% of Georgetown students actually from Washington DC, the local fan base is much smaller than most might realize. Nonetheless, lacking control of a stadium large enough to host Big East games knocked Georgetown and Villanova out of the mix in the late 1990's when UConn pushed for an upgrade.

The sheer cost of I-A for a private university is an investment with no real guarantee of return. What was the last private school to join I-A, anyway?

I think this presents problems because it puts the 1A football schools needs in conflict with the non-1A football schools and the schools that do not play footbal needsl.

Since the distinction between 1-AA and 1-A was created, I don't believe that any private schools have made the jump.

I try to refer to them as the football and basketball schools since people would understand that better. I guess you could call the football schools "All-Sports", but I'm not exactly sure about that.

Simple enough...
You can either move on up with the big boys and be a football instituion, even if you go 0-12
or you can live on a half a century ago
