Wilner: Big East, MWC/CUSA, WAC Update
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegespor...e-version/
Quote:...
The Broncos would like Air Force to accompany them into the Big East, but here’s the hitch, according to a source: Air Force is waiting on Navy, and Navy is waiting on Boise State, and Boise State is waiting on Air Force.
...
*** Again, nothing is done until it’s done, but Boise State will most likely join the Big East as early as Tuesday and perhaps not for another week or two.
...
Don’t be surprised if, ultimately, Boise State’s western partner is Brigham Young, not Air Force.
...
San Jose State and Utah State are at the top of the list. But what if the MWC only needs one school. Would it pick the Spartans or Aggies?
Utah State would enable the MWC to maintain a foothold in Utah and give the league a first-rate basketball program for NCAA tournament units.
San Jose State would give the MWC a foothold in the massive Bay Area and reunite the three California schools (SJSU, Fresno State and San Diego State).
...
The MWC continues to pursue an alliance with Conference USA, with the regular-season winners meeting in a cross-country championship game.
While far from likely, one scenario under consideration has UTEP sliding over from C-USA into the Mountain West, according to a source.
...
It touches on a lot of things. He's been as informed as anyone on the western news.

Why not both BYU and Air Force? They're not mutually exclusive. I'm liking the idea of 16 more and more.

The Big East wouldn't even have to go to 16 to get all 3 of BYU, Boise State, and Air Force, although it would be easier to do geographically-based divisions with 14 or 16 teams since it would keep Louisville and Cincinnati together.

Dont really need San Diego if you have BYU. They really have only had one decent season.

This 16 team line up actually makes sense to me. In most conferences it simply keeps teams from playing each other that have histories of playing against each other.
There is no such history in this creation so having 8 in each division actually helps keep the amount of travel across the country to a minimum while allowing the Big East to get its full conference so it can write up newer harsh penalties for leaving so that it can survive future alignment raids.
Wouldn't that be something....the Big East becoming the first 16 team football conference.
