New wrinkle: Navy may not be able to join BE till 2015?
I had heard Navy had said it would be very difficult to join with their present schedule.....I had heard they were booked for 7 years.

http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index...._from.html

A leading college official said Boise State, Houston, SMU and UCF would begin play in the Big East for the 2013 football season once invitations are accepted. Air Force is also a possibility to join then, although Navy may not be able to do so until 2015.

They should go to 14 anyways, since some of the older BE schools are still entertaining a jump to other conferences. The conference would remain strong if they do leave. Bring in ECU and USM.

Yeah...Navy is pretty well booked for the next several seasons....I guess a few of those could just convert to conference games (like the ones scheduled vs. SMU down the road)......

That means WVU, Pitt, and Cuse will be locked up in the Providence jail (heh) until July 2013.

Probably also means Mizzou can't start in the SEC until the same time, so their prez might as well take his junket to India now.

The Big East could assist them in buying out of some of those games.

Let's look at their '13 sched and what to do with each game:
@Indiana-Keep
Deleware-Buy out
@WKU-Buy out
Air Force-Could be conference
@Duke-Buy out/keep if Army's a conference game
@Toledo-Buy out
Pitt-Keep
Notre Dame-Keep
Hawaii-Buy out
South Alabama-Buy out
@SJSU-Buy out
Army-Keep and could possibly be conference

It'll take a lot of maneuvering, but its do-able.

The Big 12 actually tells teams to leave earlier than they want to.

It's not a new wrinkle, rather a known one. That's one of the reasons the 14 team model was put out. Just a guess! 03-idea

This should not be a problem. The Big East can operate with 10 teams in 2013 and 2014, assuming the three defectors get out of the 27-month clause by then, and then add Navy and BYU as the 11th and 12th teams in 2015. Not the end of the world.

There are all kinds of ways to address this. I still think the 14 team model is best because odds are the Big East will still lose a team or more before everything is said and done.

Yup operate as a 10 school, 9 game round robin for 2 years. Then move to the 12 or 14 school, 8 - 9 game model after that.

The Big XII can quit running that line regarding the loss of their TV contracts if Mizzou leaves. We all know they can pick up the phone and make the invites needed to save their network deals. If they lose them it's because they are too stingy to go, you know, to 12 teams. I am impressed by how important we seem to be nowadays.....lol

It's Navy... you don't buy out their schedule... They've got what is called "integrity"

This is an issue that should be able to be worked out just fine.

I see Navy not joining until 2015 as a significant problem. This league isn't being built for a round robin, the travel would be ridiculous. If Navy really can't get out of their Schedules, we'll need to add another team in the east. We would be missing out on two seasons of a league championship game and that would negatively effect our TV deal.

I could see the schools agreeing to play instead of Navy in 2013- a Big East team- with the provision that Navy would play them sometime in the future as an OOC game. Getting Navy into the fold and having the ability to play the conference title game would be too important...

Or could this be why the Big East is holding WV, Pitt, Syr to the 27 month provision? Figuring that by 2014 Navy could move enough around down the road to be ok.

RE: New wrinkle: Navy may not be able to join BE till 2015?
Well keep in mind....the new TV contract doesn't kick in till the 2014 season.....so there really is no urgency to add teams or a championship game till then.

I think all this "we could have 14 teams in the 2013 and 2014 seasons" is just posturing and a smoke screen.

Pitt, SU and WVU will leave in 2013 for a healthy sum of money. Then UCF, SMU, UH, BSU and hopefully AFA will come on board in 2013. That would give you 10 or 9 teams for 2013 depending on how it plays out. However, you would like that 12th team to be in place by 2014.

Which makes me think.....maybe Navy and Nova are really the 13th and 14th teams and eitherBYU, Temple and/or Memphis are really teams #11 & #12.

14 teams? Pitt, SU, & WV leaving in 2013? 03-lmfao

New TV contract kicks in 2013 season.

As far as championship game- if they had been able to get to 12 teams for next year(last year of existing TV deal)- they could have sold the rights for the 2012 game a la carte.

I think if they go to 14- one of the teams at least has to be BYU out west. Boise, BYU, Air Force, SMU, Houston, Memphis, Louisville? Then east would be UConn, Rutgers, Cincy, Navy, USF, UCF, eastern team.
