WVU suing the Big East
04-cheers

This is going to get very interesting, quickly.

According to WV radio, the issues are: Lack of leadership, breach of fiduciary duties by the BE and its commissioner. And supposedly WVU is going to say that the BE is likely to lose its AQ status which would be a breach of contract.

I think Marinara would probably prefer to avoid his league being dragged thru the mud, especially if he has replacements lined up to sustain the league. I find it hard to imagine that WVU will be playing in the BE next season. There will be a mutually agreeable settlement.

Great move by WVU. It allows them to use the BE's own incompetence against them and to frame the argument in the media, and put the BE on the defensive immediately.

RE: WVU suing the Big East
The Big East seems to have been horribly mismanaged, I am not familiar enough with precedence (or if there even is any) in this type of case to make a educated guess as to what the outcome will be.

But I hope to see WVU in the Big 12 in 2012.

RE: WVU suing the Big East
Nothing earth shattering here. WVU tried to negotiate a price for an early exit and the BE wasn't playing ball so here we are. I can't imagine that the Big East will spend millions of dollars in legal fees to hold WVU, instead of gaining 20-25 million in exit fees. Navy could take WVUs spot on the schedule next year.

Breakups are never pretty, are they?

It is interesting seeing the same opinions expressed on the BE message boards in legalese.

They are really pissed off over there about it. I can understand it to a degree, but some of the Louisville people are just being elitist and naive if they don't think Louisville would have done the same thing had they been chosen to go to the Big 12. This whole lawsuit is designed to just get the Big East at the table to negotiate the price for getting out early. That's it. There is nothing dishonorable about that, circumstances have dictated the need to do that. If the Big 12 had said we can wait for WVU til 2014, I believe we'd be honoring the agreement, but they need us in 2012, so get it done.

RE: WVU suing the Big East
I don't see what purpose keeping WVU, Pitt, or Syracuse for 2 lame duck seasons will accomplish, except to further fuel the animosity among those who are bent out of shape about this round of realignment. There are plenty on both sides, although the most heated vitriol is coming from The BEast's newer members...

Rutgers fans get why we've left, just like WVU fans knew why Pitt and Syracuse left. But I think the others are upset because they feel like they stepped up to BCS level, just in time to have the rug pulled out from under them. The uncertainty, especially in the light of certain conversations starting up on ESPiN, has them on edge. I well remember how they felt. We were in the same position in 2003, after the first ACC raid...

If i were the Big 12 i would play hardball with the Big East. Offer invites to BSU and Houston. By doing so this would leave the Big East with Zero options when it comes to football teams with a high enough ranking to keep their AQ status. It very well could kill Big East football.

RE: WVU suing the Big East
There's no way the courts will settle this in time for WVU to join the Big XII for the 2012 season, not at the speed our courts move. And now that The BEast has countersued WVU in RI courts, it will probably end up consolodated in federal court. That will probably slow the process down even more, with the additional legal fees earned by the attorneys on both sides. Although, it could end up speeding up WVU's exit...

We shall see soon enough...

I would think with the announcement of Mizzou to the SEC effective July 1, 2012, that must be some indication that WVU and the Big East are going to settle pretty soon.

I hope so. I am eager to have all this behind us, and for us to have the chance to properly welcome WVU and focus on the actual games, rather than the legalese. Clearly the BE will also be poaching, so it'd be somewhat hypocritical for them to try to hold up WVU while they try to pull in someone else. But that wouldn't be anything new, and all that matters in the end is getting business done. I'm sure that the Big 12 will try to get the most they can out of Missouri and aTm as well, so it's hard to fault the BE for putting up their own fight to maximize their payout.

IMO every school that's moving to a new conference just move immediately. It gets it all over with at once, and leaves no lingering animosities to build during lame duck seasons. But we'll see what happens soon enough...

RE: WVU suing the Big East
One reason this may move quicker than normal is because conferences need to have their conference schedules for the next year in place. The BE can't drag it out forever and likely can't prevent WVU from going--they can only collect some sort of damages.

The Big XII seems to fully expect WVU to be there next season---they released Missouri and this wouldn't have happened if they were going to require a tenth team. WVU IS the tenth team.
