To get the ugliness of this years football out of my system, I started looking at some basketball history files, and realized that this year marks the 40th anniversary of UAB's first basketball team.

Some of the longtime posters might recall this thread from about four years ago, but I am posting it for newer posters.

Contrary to Blazer folklore, Gene Bartow was not UAB's first basketball coach and it isn't true that UAB "didn't own a basketball when Bartow was hired" UAB had a club basketball team beginning in 1971 and played three seasons through 1974. The link below contains the research I found a couple of years back.

This means no disrespect to Gene Bartow and what he accomplished, but I wish the athletic department could track down some more information on these forgotten players and honor them somehow this year.

OMG! 1971?! I was only a freshman in high school. I wasn't even allowed to go on the southside back in those days. You missed your calling, you'd have made a darn good P.I.

Haha! I remember the wrestler Mike Jackson. I also remember that he never won. He was one of the cannon fodders they'd run out there against the "bad" guys.

That guy used to be my basketball coach in school.
