Tenth-ranked Washington men's soccer (1-0-2) heads East to compete in the Gamecock Soccer Classic hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., Friday, Sept. 13, and Sunday, Sept. 15. The four-team tournament features No. 11 South Carolina, College of Charleston and New Hampshire. The Huskies are set to face Charleston (2-1-1) Friday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. PT, followed by a showdown with #11 South Carolina (4-0) Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10:30 a.m. PT. Gamecock Classic Opponent Notables:
College of Charleston is 2-1-1 entering this weekend's tournament. The Cougars won two straight 2-1 double overtime matches with Georgia State and Central Florida last weekend. The Huskies have also faced Central Florida this season, battling to a 2-2 tie in their season opener at the Nike Portland Invitational. Forwards Jeff Files and Juan Carlos Londono lead Charleston with five points apiece on two goals and one assist each. This is the first-ever meeting between UW and Charleston. South Carolina boasts a 4-0-0 record heading into this weekend's action. The Gamecocks are coming off a first-place finish at the Duke/adidas Classic in Durham, N.C., with a 2-1 win over North Carolina State and a 3-0 shutout of Duke. In the all-time series with South Carolina, UW trails 0-1-1. The last meeting between these two teams ended in a 1-1 tie in 1992.
Huskies Notch First "W" In Home Opener:
Washington is fresh off its first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over No. 24 Santa Clara in its home opener, Friday, Sept. 6. Sophomore Brett Wiesner netted the game-winner for the Huskies in the 60th minute, and was assisted by senior Dayo Oyetuga. The pair teamed up for the score just 27 seconds after they re-entered the game in the second-half. UW took a 1-0 lead at the 39-minute mark on a header from junior Patrick Tanner off a cross from freshman Mike Chabala. The Broncos tied the game on a penalty shot by Burke Ewers at 52:59.
Huskies In The Polls:
In the latest Soccer America Men's Top 25 released Monday, Sept. 9, Washington moved up to 10th after a 12th-place ranking last week. The Huskies also find themselves ranked 19th in the Soccer Times Poll, but did not appear for the second straight week in the NSCAA/adidas poll.
Fit To Be Tied:
The Huskies opened the 2002 season with a pair of ties at the Nike Portland Invitational, Friday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 2. In its season opener, Washington battled through double overtime periods en route to a 2-2 tie with Central Florida. Junior Seth Marsh netted UW's first goal, assisted by junior Patrick Tanner, while senior Zac Tallman scored the second goal on a penalty kick. UW followed that match with yet another double overtime tie, this time a 1-1 decision against DePaul on Sunday. ASU's lone goal came from Tanner and was assisted by Marsh.
Tanner Leads Husky Offense:
Junior transfer Patrick Tanner (Norman, Okla.) leads Washington's offensive attack through the first three games of the season with five points on two goals and one assist. Tanner, who set the freshman scoring record at Furman with 12 goals in 2001, has scored in UW's last two games. He had the team's lone goal vs. DePaul, Sept. 2, as well as UW's first-half goal in the match vs. Santa Clara, Sept. 6. Tanner's assist came on junior Seth Marsh's score versus Central Florida Aug. 31.
2002 Notables:
The Huskies are in pursuit of their eighth straight NCAA Tournament berth...UW has a current streak of 10 consecutive winning seasons and 33 non-losing seasons dating back to 1969....Washington is one of only seven schools to compete in each of the last seven NCAA Tournaments ... Six starters return for the Huskies who lost their top three goal scorers from last season's 13-6 squad ... Departed players accounted for 22 of the team's 36 goals during 2001 ... Over half of the 26-man roster is comprised of newcomers, including 10 true freshmen and three transfers ... Mike Chabala, a prep All-American from Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif., was recognized as one of the top 25 incoming freshmen in the 2002 class ... Eight teams on the Huskies' 2002 schedule were ranked in Soccer America's preseason top 25 poll.
Exhibition Recap:
Sophomore Brett Wiesner registered a hat trick and junior transfer Sean Giudice added two goals Sunday, Aug. 25, as Washington started the season with a 7-1 exhibition victory over the University of British Columbia at Blaine High School. A pair of seniors scored the first two goals. Kyle Fukuchi opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Dayo Oyetuga followed four minutes later. Wiesner, who received honorable mention All-Pac-10 acclaim as a freshman last year, netted the next three tallies to extend the lead to 5-0 at halftime. He scored in the 15th and 27th minutes before completing the hat trick with a goal just 21 seconds before halftime. Steve Frazao recorded the lone British Columbia tally in the 46th minute. Giudice scored the final two goals in his Husky debut. The Cal State Fullerton transfer found the back of the net in the 62nd and 68th minutes.
UW Picked To Finish Third In Pac-10 Poll:
UW was predicted to repeat its third-place Pac-10 finish of a year ago in a poll of the conference coaches released Aug. 19. Stanford was picked first in the coaches poll with 34 points, followed by UCLA (31) and Washington (24). California (18), Oregon State (10) and Fresno State (9) rounded out the six-team field. Stanford is the defending 2001 Pac-10 champion and advanced to last year's Final Four.
Head Coach Dean Wurzberger:
In his 11th season at the helm of the Washington men's soccer program, head coach Dean Wurzberger looks to lead his Huskies to their eighth straight NCAA tournament berth in 2002. Under Wurzberger's guidance, Washington is one of only seven schools in the country to make seven consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. His 2000 team won the inaugural Pac-10 Conference championship, following two consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation titles. Wurzberger holds an overall record of 135-47-20 at Washington. His assistant coaches are Jimmy Gabriel, Bill May and Seth Spidahl.
2001 Season Recap:
Washington posted a 13-6 record last season and finished third in the Pacific-10 Conference with a 4-4 mark. The Huskies earned their seventh straight NCAA Tournament berth and lost 1-0 at home to Portland on a goal in the 63rd minute. Seniors Bryn Ritchie and Benjamin Somoza were first-team All Pac-10 selections and C.J. Klaas was honored as the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.
Nike Husky Classic Right Around The Corner:
Washington is set to host the 14th Annual Nike Husky Classic, Friday, Sept. 27, and Sunday, Sept. 29, at Husky Soccer Field. Teams participating include Portland, Connecticut and Marquette. Friday, Sept. 27, Portland and Connecticut face-off at 4:30 p.m. followed by Washington's match with Marquette at 7 p.m. Sunday, action begins with the Portland vs. Marquette game at 11:30 a.m., followed by Washington and Connecticut at 2 p.m.
