I love new Chancellors!
Catamount Club Bulletin
To the Catamount Club Membership:
Chancellor David Belcher today announced to the campus community a change in leadership for the Western Carolina University department of intercollegiate athletics. As generous supporters of WCU, I would like to share Dr. Belcher’s announcement with you.
We look forward to your continuing support of Catamount athletics during this time of transition.
Gorham Bradley ‘04
Western Carolina University
Assistant Athletic Director, Development
Director, Catamount Club
Dear Colleagues,
I write to share with you a change in leadership in Western Carolina University’s athletics program. Effective Tuesday, Oct. 25, Chip Smith will no longer serve as director of athletics. I want to thank Chip for his hard work on behalf of Catamount student-athletes since he came to WCU in September 2004. The athletics program has achieved some significant accomplishments over the past seven years, both on the fields and courts of play and in the classroom. Nevertheless, upon careful consideration, I have reached the conclusion that a change in leadership is needed at this time.
Fred Cantler, former senior associate director of athletics who retired in March after 33 years of service, has agreed to return to the university to serve as interim director of athletics as we conduct a national search for a permanent director. With Fred’s wealth of experience, including a previous stint as interim AD, I have the greatest confidence in his ability to keep the athletics program moving forward during this time of transition. Fred brings extensive knowledge of athletics budgeting and NCAA compliance issues to this assignment, and I am grateful to him for his willingness to assume this responsibility.
I will be putting together as soon as possible a search committee charged with identifying our institution’s next athletics director.
Please join me in continuing to support the young men and women who represent our university in intercollegiate athletics.
Sincerely yours,
David O. Belcher
Chancellor

I'll bet there's dancing in the streets in The Whee today. They've been waiting for this new President to start the slash-and-burn that was being called for by the Donors and Alums.

He put the A.D. and football coach on notice a couple of months back. With basically every other school with the name Carolina in it making strides in athletics, Western has looked ridiculous lately. I suspect they're getting ready to go all in, especially after seeing what Chattanooga has been able to do.
