20 Volleyball Extends Win Streak to 11
Cougars down the Ducks in three to remain undefeated in Pac-10 action.

Sept. 21, 2002

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University volleyball team swept Oregon 30-27, 30-19, 30-18, for the Cougars' 11th consecutive win and second Pacific-10 Conference win this season.

Playing before 1,445 fans at Bohler Gym, Washington State improved to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10 play. Oregon falls to 9-5, 0-2 in conference action.

The Cougars extended their school record to 32 consecutive games won and has been victorious in 33 out of the 34 games played this season.

LaToya Harris led all players with 15 kills (.333) and was the sole Cougar in double-figure digs with 10 with four blocks. Holly Harris killed 10 (.500) and snagged five blocks. Adrian Hankoff added seven kills, two aces and nine digs. Victoria Prince had four blocks and seven kills (.538). WSU's senior libero, Kortney Jamtaas, sat out the contest with a sore neck.

Oregon was led by Lindsay Closs' 11 kills (.353) and two service aces. Lindsay Murphy had a match-high 13 digs and Kelly Russell had three blocks.

WSU out-blocked the Ducks nine to six and hit a .374 while keeping Oregon to a .160 hitting percentage.

The first game was a tight contest with Oregon coming out strong and hanging within two of WSU in the last 10 points of the match. The Ducks were the betting hitting team in this opening game, .313 to WSU's .250. Closs had eight of her 11 kills in the opener but the balanced Cougar attack gave the home team the 30-27 win.

Washington State dominated the Ducks in the final two games, including shutting Oregon down to a .000 hitting percentage in the second game, a 30-19 Cougar win.

In the third game, the Cougars were more than halfway to the 30-18 win before the Ducks reached double-digits on the scoreboard. WSU hit a whopping .545 and kept the visitors to a .156 percentage.

"Oregon came out, like they always do, on fire at the beginning of the match," Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick said. "As they have done frequently, they kind of fade as they go along. I think they come out with too much fire and its hard to maintain that as you play. So you always know your first game with them is going to be pretty intense. And then after that, the intensity drops off. And that is exactly what happened tonight.

"Our kids maintained their compose really well considering the trash talk that was going on. It was very disturbing to me because this is supposed to be the 'Conference of Champions.' You're supposed to show some class and I'm afraid the Oregon Ducks showed absolutely no class tonight."

Washington State travels to Los Angeles to taken on #1 USC (8-0, 2-0) and #11 UCLA (7-5, 0-2) next weekend.

A win against the #1 team in the nation is always special, but a win vs #11 is sweet too.
