(10-24-2011 07:47 PM)StillJonesing Wrote:  Seriously? We lost to Memphis by 3 points on your home court in January. We beat you by 11 going away the LAST week of the regular season when you guys say you started to figure things out.

You can include the tourny but that is hardly a good reflection when it was our 3rd game in 3 days including a hard fought OT win over the league champ. We were also without our PG Brock Young who blew out his ACL.

You only won 3 more games in CUSA than we did last year. You added a highly touted freshman, we added some talented experienced transfers that were already practicing with the team. I don't see us suddenly not being able to compete this year.

Pastners still learning on the job too. I do think Lebo is a better game coach at this point. That is where the biggest edge probably is, but the talent isn't as big of a gap as you guys think.

We're ranked Top 10 in almost every poll. Your ranked 12th in this particular CUSA pre-season poll, so yeah there is.

Again, who keeps saying you won't be able to compete?? No one is man!!

And even on his best day, Donnie Jones is not going to out coach Lebo. Jones can't even out coach Pastner, so you know he can't outcoach Lebo. I am looking for ECU to have a pretty good season.

Pastner is 2-1 against Lebo, and the last one was a flat out beatdown. I know you claim Pastner cannot coach. Sorry if the majority of the basketball world absolutely disagrees with you.

What? I gave Pastner a compliment and you're still angry?

BTW, I love how you Memphis homers go right to the beatdown, but don't bother mentioning that Memphis was playing on an extra day's rest in the CUSA tournament and that ECU was coming off of an overtime win against the number one seed in said tournament just the day before. And there is not need to mention that ECU'S all conference point guard just happened to blow out his knee in that overtime win, but let you Tiger fans tell it none of those things factored into the game.

When ECU's all conference point guard played against Memphis, Pastner escaped with a 3 point win in his own building and lost by 11 points at ECU and he accomplished that with more 4 and 5 players on his roster than all of the schools in CUSA combined. Yeah Pastner's a great coach and his fourth place finish in CUSA attests to it. Hell even Bobby Knight could not have done better.

You were the one that had the egg on your face last year, like the same doubters that don't do the homework will this year.

Yeah we had an expereince team last year/ you had a young one, We also have 7 upperclassmen in the top 8 roatation again this year, including 3 with redshirts. You still have a young team and coach. Don't pretend you still have Calipari on the sidelines, and this isn't the caliber of league you went 64-0 in either. Teams like ECU have certainly closed the gap a lot and Memphis has taken a step back. Thats my point. I'd call Memphis the favorites, but it certainly wouldn't shock me if you didn't win the league regular season.

We will see what happens when we actually get some momentum and something to cheer about. Since our arena only seats 8k, obviously we can't catch Memphis, but my guess is we will begin to rank highly in C-USA.

I'm not getting to worked up about the preseason polls, because to be honest outside of the major conferences/programs very few projections are informed.

I'll say this, I think we will finish top 6 in the league this year.

Memphis wasn't just young, they were by far and away the youngest in the league, and 7th youngest in the country. Of course Memphis wasn't going to steamroll through CUSA. But we made a big run in the CUSA tournament when no one thought we could. And we had Arizona beat (who nearly made the final four), so yeah I expect big things this year. I'm not the only one either. Most experts see Memphis making the 2nd weekend of the toruney this year.

However, we both know that age plays a factor and Memphis just got a lot older. I think you'll be seeing that talent gap widening back out for the next few years. Pastner can compete with Cal on the recruiting trail without the $$$ Worldwide Wes is throwing around for Cal.

RE: CBS 2011-2012 CUSA Basketball Preview
I've never knocked Memphis's fanbase, when you won a few years in football you had good atteneance. I think you guys have a strong fanbase period. Give us a little credit too. We got fans and this is still a big time basketball state, we've just never had a program to get behind, but if we give them a reason we'll have no problem selling out our 8k seat arena this year if we pick up where we left off the last month of last season our crowds were much better, better than anything Lebo ever had at Auburn he said.

I don't think we'll do it in the OOC because it's a sorry schedule but by confernce play if we are a proven winner like we should be our arena will be near sold out IMO. When it is it's absolutly one of the toughest places to play in the league. It was in the old league when full too. Pitinio, Huggins, Creen, Calipari, Dwade, they have all said that. Very low ceilings and tightly packed 8k in that place, set up just like Cameron with the students around the court. That is going to be our biggest weapon we we get things rolling.

Dude, we were playing true freshmen! ECU was playing guys that had played together for 4 years. Come on, you're being ignorant.

First those same dumb clowns annointing Pastner are the same clowns that said that VCU did not deserve to be in the tournament; so exactly how smart are those folks. Secondly, Memphis LOST to Arizona in the opening round, which is exactly what UAB did to Clemson; so it is not like Pastner made a Final Four run or anything like that. So let's stop trying to turn Pastner into the next Brad Stevens or Shaka Smart, because right now Pastner is not even a Herb Sendek, Mike Davis, Larry Eustacy or Tim Floyd.

BTW, you Memphis homers need to stick with one story. When you thought your overrated freshmen were better than they were, then you all said that your team would not lose a conference game, due to your superior talent. When your players started losing, you guys then changed your tune to we only lost due to the team's youth. If your players were as good as you all claimed, then they would just out talent everybody else which was the case when Derrick Rose wasn't supposed to be at Memphis.

Absolutely not, I bet we outdraw Memphis in everything except Men's Hoops. Baseball, Softball, I even read we lead the league in Women's hoops attendance.

Hoops is much more difficult to get travelers to the game. You really need to rely on the local weeknight crowd.

I still think we have the most fans in C-USA, so I think my comment was accurate.

Yeah but this is a basketball thread. Your the first poster so far to bring up a different sport. We own basketball attendance in this league and we're also in the Top 20 or so nationwide, so yeah your comment was dumb.

ECU had 8 games against those 3 schools last year and the Pirates won 5 of them. And where is all of this optimism for UCF coming from? ECU has won 5 of the last 6 games againt UCF.

And there is no need to mention that ECU'S all conference point guard just happened to blow out his knee in that overtime win, but let you Tiger fans tell it none of those things factored into the game.

When ECU's all conference point guard played against Memphis, Pastner escaped with a 3 point win in his own building and lost by 11 points at ECU and he accomplished that with more 4 and 5 star players on his roster than all of the schools in CUSA combined. Yeah Pastner's a great coach and his fourth place finish in CUSA attests to it. Hell even Bobby Knight could not have done better.

Oh and Brock Young was garbage. ECU fans are the biggest homers in CUSA, period.

Will Barton's whole game was garbage. I wasn't impressed by anything that he did last year; in fact I thought his brother and Caromouche were better than him and they weren't good. So I guess that is modern recruiting; a guy doesn't have to be able to shoot, dribble, rebound or pass; but if he runs really fast and can jump really high, then he is annointed a 5 star player.

I think Tarik Black is a really good player and Joe Jackson is decent, not great but decent. But Will Barton; nooooooooooooooooo.... .

RE: CBS 2011-2012 CUSA Basketball Preview
Basketball is the one sport where you can create a more imposing enviorment and it's probably better to have a small arena can provide a bigger homecourt advantage than 20k seat ones. Even when we start selling out I hope we keep Minges as long as possible. I've been to Dukes arena, and the Dean Dome/RBC and there is zero doubt as to which is a more imposing enviroment for visiting teams. Our arena is set up almost identical to Duke with students around the court, and is about the same size, infact it's even tighter in there because it really wasn't made for 8k fans. The place is electric when full and keep winning with our fan base and that shouldn't be an issue to fill up 8k seats.

I totally agree man. I wasn't dogging the ECU fanbase, just pointing out that basketball is Memphis' sport and it shows. I like ECU, I really do. I actually played baseball against you guys at one point and it was unquestionably my favorite place to play at. ECU fans are awesome and they really care.

Again, I think ECU will be competitive, very comepetitive. Not doubting that one bit.

You must have missed our NCAA tourney game. Arizona and everyone else in the land could see the improvement, except ECU fans I guess 03-lmfao

You've been dogging Pastner since he got to Memphis and I could go back and pull up threads to prove it. His first season, you predicted Memphis to finish 3rd. Memphis finished 2nd and ever since you've claimed that all he's done is underachieved. You have something against the guy clearly.

What's wrong with changing your tune? Clearly most Memphis fans thought our freshmen would come in and dominate from day one. Stupid? Maybe so. I'll admit that much. Did we have the most upside/talent whatever you wanna call it? Absolutely. But obviously playing against teams like ECU who had plenty of solid/not great, but solid upperclassman talent was enough to outweight that talent/upside on a given night. But when Memphis was able to put it together and yes you could see that in the CUSA tourney and in the NCAA tourney, you saw a team that could dominate.

Derrick Rose is a once and a lifetime talent. No one at Memphis or in college basketball period will be the next Derrick Rose.

So you admit your original comment was stupid then. Good. I think ECU will be competitive.

I just said we have a lot of fans. A lot of fans=a lot of message board posters. So yes we're going to have a lot of posters that are all over the map with their opinions.
