Is there a rational reason why the BE would want Pitt and Cuse to stay...
...even if it has all of its invites lined up and ready to play FB for the 2013 season? Does the BE really want to have a 14 team FB conference for only one season? I could understand Pitt and Cuse sticking around for the 2012 season while the CUSA invites fulfill their one year notice req't, but what does the BE gain from having 14 schools for one season?

Clearly, the only reason is to do it out of spite. It makes the BE look small, and I think it hurts the perception of the conference. Do the fans on here want to see the BE look like Shylock asking for his pound of flesh?

If the Big East get the teams they need, then Cuse and Pitt will be let go I think. The Big East has to keep them long enough to secure their future. Once that future is secured and teams are locked in, adios amigos.

That's what I would expect to happen. However, Marinatto stated that the BE would still keep Pitt and Cuse for the full 27 months even if the BE was fully reloaded with the new members. It seems nonsensical unless Marinatto wants to exact revenge for Pitt and Cuse voting "no confidence" in the commish.

If the exit clause states that the BE gets the broadcasting revenue from Pitt and SU like (I think thats one of Big XII clause) then keep there for a year. Last year should be when ESPNs contract expires anyways

Yes, there is a very good reason. To disuade other conferences from poaching BE teams. If the BE can say, look, if you try to take our teams, not only will it cost them $10 million dollars, but you'll have to wait 27 months to get them, it just might give them pause. Probably won't, but it's definitely worth the shot. If you just let them know, then any conference knows they can get your teams overnight. If for example, the B12 knows they have to wait 2-3 season, that just might encourage them to take the easy path and invite BYU instead, knowing there is nothing preventing them from coming immediately. This is a very good reason to keep Cuse and Pitt the entire 27 months.

Neither Pitt nor Syracuse will be in the Big East next year. It makes the BE look incredibly foolish & if it requires a few more bucks to make it happen, it will happen....

Who cares what people think about the BE? Even with Pitt and Syracuse in the league is was beleaguered for its FB. Everyone will want one more shot at victory over both at home - keep them around I say.

Could it have anything with the next BCS agreement? If Pitt and Cuse remain in the Big East when that is being renegotiated, then the Big East gets the credit for having them instead of the ACC.

Again, who cares what others think of the BE. Even its own members, includiing Pitt and Syracuse had a bad opinion obviously.

It's simple posturing for a future negotiation. Nothing more and nothing less. Until we finally get to the point where we know what the conference membership will look like 1 year from now (much less 27 months from now), the Big East can't say anything other than that they're going to make Syracuse and Pitt stay the full period, even if they don't really intend that to be the outcome. Once the membership is stabilized, then I'm fairly confident that the Big East will negotiate some type of buyout from Syracuse and Pitt in exchange for letting them go earlier. It would be idiotic for the Big East party line to be anything other than "Syracuse and Pitt are staying until 2014" when the membership is still in flux, though.

miko33 - Marinatto is just posturing. He can't and shouldn't (from a legal perspective) say anything other than that right now. The Big 12 kept acting like it was going to hammer Colorado, Nebraska and A&M for massive exit fees yet they ended up getting negotiated down. It will eventually happen. You just can't expect anything other than this party line until we're assured that we know what the Big East membership will actually look like in the long-term. After that, I would be shocked if a buyout wasn't negotiated. The BE office might be dumb, but they're not THAT dumb... I think.

This is what I expect to happen especially since schools like UCF, SMU and UH will not be in until 2013. You're right, it probably is just posturing, but I can't shake the statement Marinatto made where he expects both schools to stay even if the BE has to go to 14 schools for one season.

RE: Is there a rational reason why the BE would want Pitt and Cuse to stay...
There are two ways to look at it:

1. As Frank the Tank says, it's just posturing. Meatball can't say anything other than Pitt and Syracuse are going to be held to the entire 27 month provision because the minute he does that the Big East loses some bargaining power over them. Also, if they drop hints that they'll let them go early now, before the future membership is secured, or they start negotiations along these lines it leaves the future of the conference uncertain because some teams may be coming in in 2012, others in 2013 and beyond. It's just not something they can do.

2. Meatball means what he says. I think this is the least likely of the two scenarios and if it's true he's just an idiot. He looks like a fool without having to try hard so it's hard to tell what's truth with him and what's not based on his past performance.

Obviously they will be required to fulfill the legally binding agreements they made when still members of the conference. The only real question is, in the unlikely event that they end the regular season at the top of their division, should they be allowed to play in the CCG? I say No.

Because there are contractual agreements? Whats the point of a contract if you don't honor it?

If the Big East force Pitt and Cuse to fulfill their contractual obligation to the conference (wait 27 months to leave), then the Big East would have to fulfill their contractual obligations to Pitt and Cuse (providing a conference and access to conference championships). Can't have it both ways.

This is exactly why they'll make them wait. We get poached enough as it is, no reason to make it more convenient for the schools bailing on us. Pitt and Syracuse signed that agreement, time for them to be men of their words for once.

And i Gaurentee Pitt and SU will be in the BE next year. We wont be able to get any new teams in next year other than Navy because all will have to fulfill exit agreements with their current conferences.

I like it that we can do this to dissuade future raids. The ACC has taken 5 Big east teams in 8 years, we need to stand up to them. This will cost them money because they cant renegotiate their deal until the new teams arrive. Screw the ACC

Man I'd love it if Pitt and SU were stick in a western division also.

SMU, Houston, BYU, AFA, Pitt, SU

PLEASE DO IT
