As someone who was raised in El Paso, the UT-Mexico thing cracked me up (because it's pretty much true ).

Ya, well not putting up with that kinda crap got me banned from Coogfans, which I don't regret...
I'm just sad to see that crap pop up here. I don't care if you are hispanic, it's pathetic to infer that hispanics can't make it into a "real" university in the US.

I don't think you need to take it so hard. Hell I'm writing a Master's thesis at the moment that can be categorized as Chicano studies (I'm Mexican myself who's applying to pretty much all Ivy-league schools for my doctorate this month). What I got out of the comment "UT-Mexico" was the fact that UTEP's demographics are overwhelmingly Hispanic. When the region is 85% Hispanic to begin with, it's not shocking or derisive in my opinion. The fact that a large state school has such an incredibly large percentage of a certain ethnicity illustrates that it's an aberration. At least that's where I find the chuckles, being from El Paso and embracing the fact that us Hispanics own that area. You don't really see in many large state schools in the country. But if it does annoy people, then I'll be cognizant of that and refrain from such comments.

Doesn't Houston have 1.7 million Hispanics? Explains how you earned your rep points in one day.....
BTW the WVU fans are not happy about Lambda Lambda Lambda joining. Check out their message boards. They are pressing to get out.

What gives me pause is that we hear nothing from the SMU and UCF camps, and I figured they would have accepted at the same time, but maybe its a Domino effect that Houston is pushing for and they are willing to make a $10 million gamble.
On the bolded section: have you paid attention to the Big East lately?

I agree with your comments- completely. I think some have more issue with the double-standard. Example: if an all-African American school was referred to as UT-Zimbabwe, people would be ticked off (including myself). But for whatever reason, UT-Mexico is OK. Something is out of balance in terms of what's acceptable, and what is not.

I'm not sure if you yourself are Hispanic, but there's definitely a self-deprecating aspect to Mexican comedy. Maybe those that aren't Hispanic aren't as keen on that and find anti-Mexican comments offensive?

I'm sure that plays a large part. And yes, I'm Hispanic. But the idiotic statement didn't bother me considering the source. I was just bringing to light how some folks have issue with the double-standard. But let's get back on topic. BE teams are not excited about the Houston addition, they want out.

If Houston accepts this invite to the Big East sinking ship, I will have no sympathy for them when The conference disolves, which it will.

If the Big East dissolves, then
Houston
SMU
UCF
USF
form the backbone of an excellent new league. With those 4 TV markets and recruiting markets, I'm sure Southern Miss would happily join if asked.

Good luck to Houston, SMU, UCF and ECU. Hope you do well, but gottta say, better be careful what you wish for. The BE is not stable at all. UConn and Rutgers could raise the 10 mil. in a heartbeat to get out when they want to. WVU and UL are craving to get out and go to the B12. If that happens, you'll be in worse shape than you are now, or think you are.
Good luck fellas.

Don't know why you're lumping us in. You'll be stuck with us for the forseable future. Someone has to stay here to drive the attendance average up.
