RE: Dear ECU
Why all the S#&t being thrown at ECU, one we haven't been invited, two yeah we wanted to get in a AQ confrence and applied to the BE, but what about UCF, they made no secret who they were eye balling, SMU hasn't been bashfull either. Terry Holland is doing hos job, he is try to put ECU in the best place, but as he has said EVERY TIME he has spoke on this, He and ECU would prefer to stay in C-USA and NOT change confrences, but we wouldn't rule it out! To the haters out there, POUND SAND, we don't care, we're going to look out for ECU first and always.

I'm not sure I agree with you on this ecumbh... I think he's eyed the Big East for a VERY long time, and he's not been bashful on saying things that backed that up in their interpretation. I'm not blaming him (as I've said time and time again, Id have no issue with anyone who wants to get into an AQ conference at the time)... but to say he'd 'prefer' C-USA? Im not so sure about that.

He said this WEEK on the radio in Greenville, Pirate Radio 1250 and said he'd prefer not to change confrences because it's not easy to do and cause lots of issues.

That's this week.. but I remember the comments TH made about "wanting to be an in Eastern Time Zone conference", or being in a "Coastal only conference"....

Maybe it was just his frustration over some travel costs, but he was NOT singing the same tune this entire time.

Thats why I say I dont think hes been an ardent C-USA supporter, but he's never stabbed the conference in the back *cough*TCU*cough*

ECU's travel cost concerns are legit, so I forgive some of their yakking about that. But there's just nothing we can do about it that would make sense for the rest of the league.
They are a valuable member of this league.

RE: Dear ECU
From both Steve Ballard and Terry Holland:
http://www.ecupirates.com/genrel/091911aaa.html

Sept. 19, 2011

The university leadership and the Pirate Nation have been steadfast and undaunted in preparing and positioning our athletics program to be a viable conference member that wins championships on and off the field and has the opportunity to participate in BCS bowls. The achievements include $92 million in facility improvements and additions, growing football attendance figures that produced an average of 49,665 fans per game in 2010 and record football season ticket sales reaching over 24,000 this fall.

In addition, statewide television viewership of ECU games equals the top five DMA areas in the nation for a football program that has won two of the last three Conference USA championships and earned five consecutive bowl appearances.

Recent announcements related to conference realignment have created an atmosphere of urgency and uncertainty across the nation for institutions, athletics departments and fan bases at those institutions. The leadership at East Carolina University is actively engaged in conference realignment discussions and remains aggressive in positioning the athletics program in an ever-changing conference landscape.

At this time, no one knows exactly how the future of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) will look. While many of the developments are not in East Carolina's control, we will continue to work diligently to influence any realignment possibilities as opportunities present themselves. There will be intense competition for any available automatic-qualifying BCS slots, which could include anything from a realigned C-USA to any number of other conference configurations.
In these uncertain times, we must remain focused and determined on what we can control and what has brought success to our program thus far. For our coaches and student-athletes, that assignment is to prepare, compete and win in the classroom and on the field, and for our loyal Pirate fans, it is imperative that we continue to fill our stadiums and arenas in Purple and Gold.

Steve Ballard
Chancellor, East Carolina University

Terry Holland
Athletics Director, East Carolina University

So we've only ever looked toward the BE????????

ECU is such a proud school and so rich with fans.

I just hope that they won't lay down for the BE, or the BCS, or anyone else.

We and ECU aren't paying Terry to be a ardent C-USA supporter, but we are paying him to be a ARDENT ECU supporter, in which ever confrence would or will be the BEST fit for ECU. Unlike you, I have actually talked with Terry and he has said nothing is ever ruled out, but he and ECU would like if possible to stay in C-USA and get AQ that way. Come down for the game later this year, he'll be there and as always walk the tailgating lots, you to can talk to Terry if you want and ask him your self. Yes, he's floated the idea of a "eastern" or "coastal" confrence, but he also foated and baseball stadium that got rid of the "jungle" and luxury siutes in the east endzone of DFS. Both fell flat and we still have the "jungle" in CLS and 7,000 SEATS in DFS. There is a differnce in promoting the school that right your pay check and pays you to promote the school and another to say he is against C-USA.

RE: Dear ECU
My issue is Terry isn't the only one "pimping" to other confrences and has never public bashed C-USA. Yet, ECU fans get more sh$t over Terry than other fans for a AD that is proactive in make sure our school is in the best postion, at least in the things we control, that we can be for possible realignment. People have bashed him for years now, I'm sick of it and I'm defending my school and AD, who has been the best AD hands down we've EVER had. ECU hasn't had the growth it's had in time Terry has been AD under any other AD, ever.

RE: Dear ECU
Terry Holland was fighting to get ECU into an AQ BCS Conference. The only one that ever made sense was the Big East. The Big East we were fighting to get into is slowly dying. Even if ECU was to get an invite at this point that would mean that WVU and UL were officially gone. Any school on their way to the Big East has a window of 2-3yrs and then things are going to change for them again that includes ECU if we choose to join the insanity that is the Big East. At this point I would prefer ECU to stay in CUSA along with UCF, UH and SMU. It would basically destroy the Big East once and for all but I don't think any of our AD's or Presidents are strategic enough to do so. They will chase that carrot that is the BCS even if the carrot is getting ready to go away. Just shows how sad and pathetic the BCS has made us all that we would line up to hump a corpse that is the Big East.

I really do not care what others think about the way TH has handled this. I would be upset if he had not been proactive and aggressive in this expansion climate. We have made it clear that gaining AQ was our next goal of our football program and he is actively seeking to reach that goal...anyway he can. I would expect the same from any of the CUSA members that might have an opportunity to step up and will not have one iota of animosity towards any that do. To be honest...other than USM and Marshall, ECU has had no traditional ties or history to regret not being associated with in the future. If this merger manages to get ECU to the AQ level(and I really seriously doubt it can) that will be fine with me moving forward and TH will have done his job. If not?...I expect him to continue to work hard toward that goal.

RE: Dear ECU
Terry Holland's goal was to get ECU a BCS AQ qualification. Time and time again, he said his first choice to do that was to get CUSA an AQ bid. However, we all know that would've never happened. He also said time and time again, that he wanted C-USA to expand with more schools in the eastern half of the footprint to alleviate some travel issues for us. However, C-USA was not interested in expanding. I can't blame them. I never liked that idea.

I remember hearing him say several times that the best scenario would be for C-USA to gain AQ BCS status. Everyone knew that the most probable way to gain BCS AQ status was through the Big East; however unlikely that was. It was still a better chance than C-USA to get an AQ.

I think most Pirate fans have been very happy with C-USA. It's a good group of schools and we've gotten better as a conference. We were never keen on the Big East; just the mere fact that they were BCS.

Now, it appears the Big East is dead. They're just figuring out where to bury the body. I hope Louisville and WVU get out while they can. I don't want ECU to be any part of that mess!!!!!!

It's going to be pretty damned funny if UCF, Houston, SMU leave for the Big East, Boise and Air Force opt to stay in the New Merged Conference, Navy decides it's better to be an independent, and the dominos fall for the SEC and Big 12 and the Big East is screwed.

We'd let you rejoin the conference of course, but only if you forfeited a large percentage of your media rights and paid a remittance fee. Otherwise you can just join the Sun Belt in the "We had one good season so let's be dicks on the Internet as if we're not going to go back to sucking at some point." division. 05-stirthepot
