Exclamation GAME #5 - BUTLER W 38-23 (2-3)
2008 L 7-56 in Buies Creek
2009 L 16-23 in Buies Creek
2010 W 27-10 in Indianapolis

RealTimeRPI: Butler #190, Campbell #233
Sagarin: Butler #216, Campbell #243 (Butler by 12)

With the exception of Valpo, CU has probably had the more success vs Butler than any other PFL team.

Bulldogs are coming off a nice win at Dayton (29-27).

(I believe Fall Break is this week.)

RE: GAME #5 - BUTLER
I am not confident again. With campus gone (not that many would have been at the game any way after the JU performance) on fall break this may get ugly. Butler can score and are a more balanced team then they have been in the past. Their quarterback is going to attack our defensive backs just like the Drake quarterback and they have the added benefit of having a very good running back.

I think we have to win Saturday or it may get to panic mode. The program needs this win and the staff needs the win and several more this year to keep on the payroll.

I agree. This is must win for us but I still don't see it happening based on what I have seen so far this season. The JU loss really set the team back I think.

It was a big win. I am shocked that we committed and did so well with the run in the second half. Maybe this team has a little more fight in them than I thought.

Great win. I agree it could have been panic time with a different result. Carl Smith was a beast all day and the two goal-line stands early to hold Butler to field goals were huge. Well-played all around.

My random thoughts and observations from the Butler game.

Great crowd support for the team once things go interesting in the second quarter. You can tell the team really fed of the energy of the crowd. If the team could get more vocal support earlier in the game, it would make a big difference. Interesting to note that the two smallest home crowds in CU history: Valpo last year and Butler this year; both resulted in wins.

The defense against the pass is still a major problem. Butler could pretty much pass at will with 10+ yards/pass in the 1st quarter. It does seem like CU is doing a much better job of tackling and containing players once the passes are complete. We have got to find a way to put more pressure on the QB.

I thought the offense did an excellent job. They went back to what made them successful towards the end of last year: running the ball and controlling time of possession. The good thing is that this year we have a very credible passing threat. Nevertheless, with our defensive frailties, our best defense is to keep the opposing offense of the field.

To me, the MVP for Campbell in this game was the Butler head coach. He made some choices that really cost his team. Why if you can pretty much pass-at-will would you try to establish a running game? Early the Campbell defense really had their heads down and it look liked the game was heading in the same direction as the Jacksonville and Drake games. But for some reason Butler decided to focus on their ground game. This allowed CU to make some plays (especially the goal line stand) and really gain confidence. The failed fake punt call deep in their own territory was what really turned the game around.

Overall a huge win for Campbell. If they had lost this game, you could really see the season falling apart. Other than SD, I think they have a reasonable chance in all their remaining games.

Agree with the point about their coach, along with the decisions you mentioned the fake punt was ill-timed and not designed well.

Great win. I was able to listen in as the momentum turned. Super excited about the victory.

Was the best game CU has played to date. Offense did a good job and the Defense stopped the run. Still need to work on the pass defense.

Ball control and our offensive line controlling the line of scrimmage was a big difference. What can you say about Carl Smith. I have been yelling loudly at the coaches for 3 1/2 years to put the guy in the game and give him a chance. With the other tailbacks out with injury Coach Steele had no choice except to run Carl. If Carl gets 100 yards in a game we win. When we run well the passing game opens up as well.

Great job by Preston Dodson on the onside kick as well.

Last Saturday is how CU football is suppose to work. Hope to see a lot more of that. What we did last week is the formula for sucess.

I agree that is the formula that we need to stay with for at least the rest of the season since we are blessed with a large offensive line and a few talented running backs.
