RE: Rick Pitino weighs in
cardshouse, WVU would want no part of that lineup. Independence would be better...

But because of the non-football schools and the ruin they have brought upon the conference, the answer is obvious: The football side of the conference will simply vote to dissolve and any teams left over will (I hope) go to the Big 12. Though it's been sullied the last couple of years, it is, after all, one of the greatest names in college football history.
i agree with this. fairly or unfairly, the reason the big east (football) is dead is because of the non d-1a football schools. in my mind the death knell of the big east came when the 5 c-usa schools came in. it wasn't the fact that 5 teams from a perceived lower tier conference came in, but it was the fact that when 3 big east football schools left, the conference invited in 3 football playing schools and 2 non football schools bringing the conference to 8 football sponsored members and 8 non football sponsored members. there was absolutely no reason to invite depaul and marquette other than to ensure an equal representation of agendas. gridlock when it came to expansion choked the football side to death.
louisville, cincinnati, and south florida have proven on the football field that they can hang. get them in another aq conference and they'll be fine. but the remaining big east football schools need to drop the basketball schools yesterday. the big east was conceived as a basketball conference. let those 8 remaining have their basketball conference again and the rest of us (6 or 7 depending how you look at it) go with the big 12 north.
even with the idea of having 16 team superconferences looking to be a reality, i do not see this thing working for the schools longterm. i don't think it matters that there is a bunch of money being thrown at these schools by espn/fox/cbs/nbc, 16 schools is way too big a conference to make everyone happy.
