DENTON, Texas – Head coach Johnny Jones has announced the 2011-12 North Texas basketball schedule, which includes rematches with Texas Tech and LSU, as well as additional games against traditional powers from the Big 12 and SEC, and regional rivalries.
After knocking off LSU and Texas Tech last season, those squads will get another shot at the Mean Green in 2011-12. NT will take on LSU on Dec. 22 at the Super Pit, and the Red Raiders in Lubbock on Nov. 16.
The Mean Green, winners of five straight 20-win seasons, will face Mississippi State and Texas in back-to-back road games on Nov. 27 and 29. The Longhorns are one of four NT opponents that saw postseason action last year after playing in the Big 12 title game.
“Once again we have a demanding schedule that will be exciting for our fans and challenging for our team, and just like in previous years we look forward to embracing it. The non-conference portion of the schedule will prepare us for the always tough Sun Belt.”
Regional rivalries abound on the 2011-12 Mean Green slate. NT will play its final game in Texas Hall against UT Arlington on Nov. 22, while Sam Houston State (Dec. 10) and Grambling State (Dec. 20) will both make trips to Denton. North Texas opens the season on Nov. 11 against St. Gregory’s of Oklahoma.
For the first time since 2007-08 North Texas will compete in a regular season tournament – the Loyola Marymount Centennial Classic in Los Angeles. NT will take on La Sierra on Dec. 2, followed by Columbia and Loyola Marymount on Dec. 3-4, respectively.
This year’s Sun Belt schedule features a home matchup against Western Kentucky on Jan. 12, and a Sun Belt Tournament title game rematch with UALR as the SBC opener on Dec. 29. NT will also face Troy on New Year’s Eve, Denver (Jan. 22), Arkansas State (Jan. 28), Middle Tennessee (Feb. 2), ULM (Feb. 16) and Louisiana-Lafayette (Feb. 18) in Sun Belt play.
The Sun Belt Tournament will once again be held in Hot Springs, Ark., from March 3-6. The Mean Green has played in three of the last five Sun Belt Tournament finals, including each of the last two.
North Texas returns to the court with a recruiting class already heralded as one of the nation’s best. Hoopscooponline.com rated the Mean Green class No. 31 nationwide prior to the additions of Tony Mitchell (No. 12 nationally in 2010), Roger Franklin (Oklahoma State), Niko Stojiljkovic (U18 French National Team) and Justin Patton (All-SWAC at Grambling State).
