Aggies Get Their SEC Invite

At tonight's SEC Presidents Meeting, early word filtering out from Atlanta indicates that Texas A&M received the sufficient votes to gain an invitation to join the Southeastern Conference effective 7/1/2012.

Sources at Texas A&M have indicated that a press conference will likely take place tomorrow following tonight's vote. It is expected that President R. Bowen Loftin will accept the invitation at the press event.

In other news, details are sketchy but sources also indicate that the SEC presidents gave SEC Commissioner Mike Slive the authority to negotiate with both Missouri and West Virginia to possibly be the fourteenth conference member.

Aggie Websider is working to confirm this preliminary information leaked from tonight's meeting.

ESPN.com has it. But there is a condition: no one in the BigXII files suit. And that condition has not been met.

Looks like Baylor was "renigging" on an agreement made prior to aTm's decision to leave; but now hearing that they are backing off. It's going to happen quickly IMO.

I dont think the players really care about all this confrence shakeup too much. They are both already in the "AQ" club, and its not like you hear a kid say "Im playing for X because they are in the Y confrence" all that much, if at all.

Looks like the info I received was off a bit. Now ESPN is reporting that Baylor is sueing aTm for leaving to join the SEC. Here is a statement from the aTm President:

President R. Bowen Loftin, Texas A&M University Statement Regarding Conference Situation

“We are certainly pleased with the action taken last night by the presidents and chancellors of the Southeastern Conference to unanimously accept Texas A&M as the league’s 13th member. However, this acceptance is conditional, and we are disappointed in the threats made by one of the Big 12 member institutions to coerce Texas A&M into staying in Big 12 Conference. These actions go against the commitment that was made by this university and the Big 12 on Sept. 2. We are working diligently to resolve any and all issues as outlined by the SEC.”

Ags acceptance to SEC contingent upon . .

It seems logical that if Baylor sues to keep the Ags in the B12 . . against the Ags better judgment . . that the Ags would countersue Baylor . . could get ugly !!

Will get ugly. Let's face it, Baylor has a LOT to lose here! Hard to tell where this is going; but in the end (and hopefully soon) aTm still moves to the SEC.

But every single one of their fans does care. Thats where it could get ugly.

Well TAMU getting admitted to the SEC will be the beginning of the end for the Big XII as I predicted about a month ago, granted I had Texas going independent and now it looks that they may go to the Pac-16, but I knew the Big XII was doomed.

TAMU leaving all but assures the Big XII will be done in 1-3 years and that could mean Baylor ends up out of the AQ club. That's why this will get ugly.

Also conference affiliation, even among the AQs, means more than you're giving it credit for. Some players would rather play at a mid to bottom teir SEC or Big Ten school, than a top tier ACC or Big East school.

True. But I think playing time in front of the camera means more to players.

I don't think conference affiliation or television exposure can be used as blanket statements for the priorities of recruits. Some kids would rather play on a 3-9 SEC team, than a 10-2 CUSA team. Some kids would rather play in the Sun Belt than the SEC if it meant they could be a four year starter and be on TV 2-3 times a year for four years, rather than maybe not starting till their junior or senior year.

When the dust up is over, is it likely that Baylor and Kansas State become members of the MWC assuming no openings in CUSA?

I think Iowa State is in the most trouble. I cannot see another AQ conference taking them. As long as the Big East is still around I'd consider Kansas State a pretty safe bet for the Big East and Baylor would certainly have a fair shot as well.

If Kansas State and Baylor are both left in the cold, I think they'd have their choice of either one of MWC or CUSA, I imagine CUSA would have no problem expanding to 14 if Kansas and Baylor fell into their lap.

The other school(in addition to Iowa State) that could get terribly screwed is TCU. If the SEC, ACC, Big Ten and Pac 12 all expand to 16 teams the Big East will likely be doomed as well and TCU would likely be shut out and forced back to the little kids table with the rest of us.

In that scenario Cincy probably is screwed as well, do not see them as a cultural and/or academic fit in the SEC, ACC or Big Ten. Louisville could be in trouble as well unless the ACC ends up needing them.

Unlikely. The Big East has expressed interests in Missouri, Kansas State, and Kansas in the past when the last time it was rumored that the Big XII would fail. If the Big LEast gets those three, that conference will be up to 12 members with football provided it isn't poached by the ACC or $EC.

so if the Big East ends up bringing in Mizzou and the Kansas schools will they change their name? that would put four of their programs west of the Mississippi.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'm beginning to think that the Ivy League has it correct.

You only have academic scholarships, and you put a FB team
on the field composed of student athletes. Maybe one of
these days we will see a FBS or FCS university get fed up
and go the University of Chicago route.

BTW IMO Baylor Bears are stinky and they have plenty of
company. A large number of BCS institutions are way too
big for their pants.
