Disagree. A 6:00 p.m. start time isn't an inconvenience for me because I have a job that allows me a fair amount of flexibility when it comes to work hours and I don't have a family/kids/etc.
However, I know several people with tickets who either don't have a job that is as flexible. For example, one of my buddies is a die hard Cardinals fan but works at a business where the delivery trucks come in at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. With so few people on the unload staff, he can't request off at that time. Other people can't sacrifice vacation/sick days to get off to make it to the game. I know several people at my friend's workplace who didn't have the vacation/sick days available to take off work earlier but who still made the game around 7:00 - 7:30. Every one of those guys is a huge Cardinal fan but they can't sacrifice their livelihoods or paychecks for football.
UofL choose to sacrifice a more convenient start time for national TV exposure. I don't blame them for doing it (stats point out that it boosts recruiting), but they really should not have been surprised at its effect on attendance.

You're right for the casual fan. But die hard fans plan these things in advance, to ensure they have the best seats possible...
Yeah, I'm assuming the majority of arses in the seats were season ticket holders (such as myself). Even I had to show up late though with my 6-year-old son in tow because my wife who is a real estate agent had an appointment pop out of the blue for game night regarding a corporate relocation. Life happens to everyone and when you plan for a 6PM week night kickoff some people will run into it regardless of planning.

Oh, I agree with you there. Sometimes life gets in the way of the best laid plans. But these things happen...

Classes were not canceled and students that didn't have tickets were trying to leave campus to find some place to watch it while those fans with tickets were heading to campus. Major traffic jam around the stadium. Couple all that with temps in the triple digits, I'm pretty happy.

Same thing with Rutgers. Classes started at Rutgers yesterday and my son has a Thursday night class so he was late getting to the game too.

Butts in seats was more like 32,000. Really sad that SU can't get better attendance. Go to the State Fair some other day!!
State Fair?? Gosh, we can't have ours until Oct. and even then it is sometimes to hot to go. Is it true that the Carrier Dome is not air conditioned?

Easy...group think.
Some very shallow people are many times influenced by others...i.e. they won't leave until they see others leaving...and that influences their decision to do just that, leave.
While some "strong" individuals never let others determine their arrival or departure time...but you have to remember, probably half (or more) in large crowds are weak...and are easily influenced by others.

Well, we cant have the State Fair in October in Upstate NY
Just kidding. The Carrier Dome doesnt have central air but thats not the reason. I wasnt at the game last night, which is a good thing because I had an important meeting this morning and I wouldnt have gotten home until after 2am after getting to my car and fighting traffic and driving an hour and a half back home. But from looking at the crowd on tv it seems that the 40,000 plus that was reported is accurate. Its hard to judge the Dome crowd sometimes.

That's not even remotely close to being true. The announced attendance was accurate.

Yes. Summer is short and winter is long here. The only time the Dome really needs air conditioning is the first couple football games and commencement. The rest of the year the Dome is comfortable. They didn't put AC in the Dome because it really only needs it three or four days a year.
Carrier was one of the few major companies that hadn't yet pulled out of Central New York when the Dome was built. They got the naming rights for a pittance.

I was in Row U on the 35 yard line and there was NOBODY behind me. On the other side of the field there were sections with the top third of the section completely empty. The area behind the goal posts opposite the band was empty. There were a lot of pockets of empty seats in the 100 level.
I stand by 32,000 butts in seats.

We still need to go with the official numbers. We can't tell if anyone's official numbers are accurate. I watched a B10 game on television that claimed 102,000 fans but I swear it looked more like 95,000 to me.

Last night BE games - attendance
The attendance was expected if anyone really knows about Su. It's nearly impossible Competing against the 'Fair'. They should either get a 'Big Name' school to open against, or not have a home opener till after the Labor Day weekend!

FYI...Syracuse did open up on the road from 2001-2004...and then again in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
Looks like they try to open up on the road when they can.

Their is an interview where Gross says he was told on arrival that you don't schedule a game at home on opening weekend. He is trying to change that.
