Great background story on Gary Patterson
If you want to know how he works and what makes him tick, this is a good read.

I used to think our 10+ year success was mainly TCU changing its philosophy and getting aggressive with infrastructure, budgets etc and that we'd have had the same or at least similar success with a different coach (I would especially tell myself this when Patterson was rumored to be leaving). And I do think our change in philosophy to want to play in the college football arms race is a big factor of our success. But the biggest factor is clearly Patterson.

I edited the post with a nonsubscriber direct link.

Also, here is a web only interview with the writer they put up:

http://www.texasmonthly.com/2011-09-01/webextra.php

Thought this was interesting quote from the writer:

Question: Which would lead one to think that Patterson is going to be tempted to move to a major college football program that gets major attention.

Writer: But there’s something Patterson once told a reporter that I find very significant. He said, “No matter who’s at Alabama, it’ll always be Bear’s house,” referring to coach Bear Bryant, who created the great football program there. I think Patterson doesn’t want to go and win a national championship at a program that someone else built. He likes the idea of winning the championship at a program he built himself. It would be a singular achievement that only few coaches in history can claim to have done.

He is a great coach who will do great things for TCU and the BE. I am looking forward seeing the Frogs visiting the Rent. It should be a great game. Welcome to the BE!

Being THE MAN, the one who creates a tradition, is much more desireable to some than just following in the footsteps of those who have gone on before you. Patterson seems to be that kind of man...

I'm hoping Dana Holgorsen feels the same way...

BE needs some coaching stability. I hope Holgorsen is successful and he stays. I know coach P at UCONN is now a lifer unless he is fired.

Husky, Pasqualoni may be a lifer. But his lifespan is kind of limited, unless he's going to coach until he's as old as JoePa...

Coach P played for Joe Pa LOL. He just turned 62. I think he can probably coach until he is about 70. Our current DC Don Brown would be a pretty good replacement if Coach P is gone.

RE: Great background story on Gary Patterson
Many don't know that Patterson had a big hand in securing the funds for the stadium redo. He personally went to some of the Fort Worth deep pockets to get the donations, many of whom were not even TCU Grads, but who were Ft Worth-o-philes who want a big time program in the city.

Honestly, I think we are very lucky to have had the right guy come along right when we decided to change our phiosophy and get aggressive and participate in the college football arms race. His nose to the grindstone, chip on the shoulder attitude is exactly what we needed.

I think Babb, Bailey and Del Conte brought GP to the final meetings with donors to help seal the deal. But I also think that they don't mind giving him, as the face of the program, the credit.

RE: Great background story on Gary Patterson
Pat Sullivan and Dennis Franchione helped turned around the program but neither of them could have done what Gary Patterson did. It may still say Amon G. Carter Stadium on the outside, but it's the House That Patterson Rebuilt.
