The four super conferences will become a reality -- and I've forever believed they will while forming their own division under the NCAA umbrella or breaking away from the NCAA altogether. They'll also probably have their own postseason basketball tournament and make billions and their own postseason football playoff and make kazillions. And though the football playoff would be a dream realized for most college sports fans, I can't help but think college basketball could be ruined because A) all super-conference schools would likely make the field of 64 or 72 or whatever, which would render the regular season useless, and B) the Butlers, Virginia Commonwealths and George Masons almost certainly would be reduced to second-tier status.

More specifically, they probably wouldn't even be involved.

It's a day I'm not looking forward to. At all. But it's a day that seems inevitable because of everybody's quest to get bigger and richer and ensure those that are smaller and/or without football cease to exist in any nationally relevant way.

Sad, but inevitable. Of course, I bet big boys will be happy to continue to pay the midmajors to play regular season games to pad their records. We should tell them to screw off and beat each other up, all season long, but that won't happen either.

I'm sure this is all President Obama's fault! Hey. By the way. Have you seen Rick Perry? If he's not genetically linked to George W. Bush, I'll be amazed. Disregarding their political views, he really does resemble ex president Bush.04-cheers

Obama's not going to get any blame. He blames everything on Bush.

More from CBS
(Better enjoy it now. It won't be here long.)

The NCAA's head honcho from 1993 to 2002, Dempsey told the Birmingham News that "the handwriting is on the wall" when it comes to college athletics superconferences and the eventual split of those conferences from the rank-and-file of Division I.

The make-or-break issue, as you might expect, is the full cost of attendance scholarships that only the superconferences will be able to afford. "There's no doubt we're looking in the next three, four or five years -- at most -- of seeing conferences from 14 to 18 members," Dempsey said.

Those conferences would then either have a new set of NCAA rules rewritten for them, or -- in a move Dempsey characterizes as "less likely" -- simply withdraw from the NCAA entirely.

I've basically lost all interest in professional sports, where it's all about the money. Looks like college sports are heading in the same direction- although I guess the big time programs are already there.

Still, now that I think about it, college football and basketball are two entirely different animals. Even now not all the D1 basketball schools are in the top classification, so if they go to a super-division in football, that might not affect basketball (except that the rich will get richer).

If college sports are going to act like a professional minor league, why not just make them a minor league?
