AMES, Iowa - Redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Flynn drove the Cardinal team of mostly first-teamers 60 yards in six plays, setting up a win- clinching Tony Yelk 27-yard field goal with six seconds remaining in 2003 Iowa State football spring game in Jack Trice Stadium. The kick lifted the Cardinal to a 30-27 win over the White team (second and third-teamers). The White team had been spotted a 20-0 advantage before the start of the game. Flynn, who played with the white squad in the first half, hit on 4-of-5 passes for 50 yards with the Cardinal squad. The game was played in a steady rain with temperatures in the 50s.

The White team tied the score on a 70-yard TD pass from Cris Love to Jon Davis with 5:45 left in the game. Love finished the game hitting on 10-of-20 passes for 93 yards and the touchdown with the second- and third-teamers and 2-of-4 passes for 74 yards and a 14-yard TD pass to Lane Danielsen with the first-teamers. Combined, Love hit on 12-of-24 passes for 107 yards and two TDs. Flynn, who hit on 3-of-7 passes with one interception with the White team, finished the game with 7 completions in 12 attempts for 64 yards overall.

The game's statistics do not include an eight-minute stretch of the contest when no statistics were kept while the press box was evacuated because of a fire alarm. The alarm was caused by steam from a hotplate placed near an alarm sensor.

Hiawatha Rutland was the game's leading rusher, with 12 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown, including a 58-yard scamper. The long run set up the Cardinal's first touchdown, with Rutland scoring on a 3-yard run with 6:26 left in the second quarter.

The first-teamers (Cardinal) rolled up 413 total yards while the White team of second and third-teamers could muster only 87 total yards. Nik Moser had three tackles for the Cardinal. Gabe Bakker, Steve Paris, Matt Robertson and Kyle Smith had six tackles for the White team.

So how do you feel about the upcoming post-Seneca Wallace season, FANOCYS? As I've told you, I'm a South Carolina fan, so I know how it feels to struggle against college football's elite teams every year.

I'm happy for Kansas State's turnaround in the last decade.....but I'd love to see you guys or Mizzou shake things up this year and make it interesting. I understand Oklahoma State might be pretty good, too.

im a hopeless fan of the underdog also!
IMO ISU will have a much better TEAM than last year wallace was as much of a hinderence as help.for a running qb his yardage was low his passing skills were ok.we do have all four recievers back plus some good youg guys.i think we will run the full back alot more this year a RS Frosh named kock.the de is good not great but will improve over last year.the stats look bad more because of turnovers than bad de.13 by sw in the last three games alone.so im very optimistic.
MIZZU is another one of those teams that SHOULD do well with a good mix of new and returning talent on both sides of the ball.
OKIE STATE and nu get things started this year for the 12!this game is bigger than many think.nu is pulling out all of the stops from a physc.point of view a bunch of former players and coachs will be introduced before the game.along with other hype if they lose it will be a huge let down.it will also be tough on OKIE ST if they lose as they want to make a break through statement.so the whole thing just keeps getting bigger the cowboys have a very good passing attack and the huskers are weak on pass de..OKIE ST is a little weak on the O LINE and nu is yep strong on the de line.it should be another wild year here in the north.

Yeah, we had the same deal at South Carolina last year with our QB Corey Jenkins (who's gone, now). But he was primarily a runner.........those running quarterbacks are good and bad. I'm glad Jenkins is gone, honestly.......so I know how you feel about Wallace. He was fun to watch though!

Yeah, the OSU-Nebraska game will be interesting. I think OSU has a good chance......
