c-empire, your glass is definitely half empty. One game does not a season make. Try a little optimism.
Yes, Pitt took a whuppin on national TV. However, that Notre Dame team just might be good. They were good last year, but terribly inconsistent. They did beat Michigan and Tennessee. Enter Weis and we may just see how good their talent can be week in and week out.
The ND O-line controlled the game. Again no surprise. ND's O-line had 93 starts; Pitt's D-line had 10 starts and none of them in the same position. Add to that the fact that Darius Walker, a good RB, is now an even better sophomore RB. Quinn also has a fine tutor in his new head coach. Remember that Pitt only won by 3 last year on a late comeback engineered by Palko's grit.
Palko did a pretty good job this year, but his right hand was injured early in the game. It may have been even broken.
ND won by 21, 3 TD's. Take away the KO fumble by Furman and the foolish personal foul by Blades on ND's 3rd and 25, and ND loses 14 of those points. There's no telling if Pitt might have scored had they had those 2 possessions.
ND deserved to win, and they did. Pitt will regroup.

UL needs to beat UK which is a BCS OOC game.
I disagree that Syracuse needs to slaughter WVU. Uh. WVU is Big East too. How about a well-played and closely fought game between two great Big East programs, huh?
Bearcat84....
Sorry...you are correct about the Cuse/WVU game....I forgot Cuse was playing WVU.....

I love when people put words or even better" generalizations" in my mouth. We are discussing week ONE'S MATCHUPS. Rutgers (BE) vs Illinois(B10) and USF vs Penn St. You fared just about how you were supposed to in WEEK ONE. UL will paste UK = BE will beat SEC(a BCS conf team). Got it.

Why I'm responding to name-calling is really beyond me, but here goes.
MoFo, what exactly about my comments makes me a "clown"? Is it because I am calling spades spades and saying that the entire conference took a dump this weekend? I mean, it is very clown-like to get angry when Pitt gets blown out at home, Rutgers blows a 20-point lead against a Big Ten cellar dweller, and WVU/Cuse take offense back to the 1800's.
Sorry, the "clown" thing to do here is put on a happy face and yuck it up like we just set the country on fire. I'm obviously not alone as other share my opinion that we looked BAD this weekend. If you don't like a dose of reality coming from within, well you might be wise to stay away from TV, radio, and the internet for the next couple of weeks. Fans, foes, and MEDIA will be going to town on the Big East after the way we ALL looked (Louisville included) this weekend.

I agree that the BE sucks and it looks like a long season ahead. The Ville strugled with a poor Kentucky team and Pitt has no Defence.
MT says no exansion to 9 teams, I think he should be thrown out as Commish. We are the only major conf with 8 teams boringgggggg. We need to add a solid football school to our conf. nowwwwwww.
The season is young and teams willo get better.

Big East Brothers, please accept my apology! Most Cards fans feel we are fortunate to be in the Big East. CardinalEmpire.com does not speak for most of us.

I think we'll be fine long-term. Pitt was just totally outclassed on the line. Pitt's front 7 didn't have one guy who had started in his position before. Three or four of the guys in the 8-man DL rotation are freshmen. The top D-lineman was injured and didn't even play until the second half. ND's O-line, on the other hand, had over 100 starts among their top 6 guys. Pitt's D will improve.
UL played a rival and won. Rivals frequently give each other tougher games than what their true talent would indicate. Bottom line is UL got the win.
UC got a W with a very young team.
USF played PSU closer than anyone expected they would in a hostile environment.
Rutgers was a letdown in the 2nd half, but they definitely showed true potential in the first half. We must remember that Rutgers doesn't have a lot of experience holding on to a lead. they, too, will learn.
Week two will be important. UL has off, and UC is the only team playing a quality opponent (at PSU). Hopefully, the other 6 teams can win games that should be gimmes. I hope that none of the coaches/teams takes any of these lesser opponents for granted.

Quote:WVU/Cuse take offense back to the 1800's.
-- What did you expect? I had to explain this on the CUSA board but I didn't think I would have to do so here. Syracuse has a new HC who has installed an offense that is very different to the one the Oragne have used for the last 20yrs....West Virginia had a new QB, 3 new WRs, new RBs etc and freshman all over the field ...if you were expecting a Donovan McNabb vs Marc Bulger shootout that graced this series a 7 or 8 yrs ago you weren't being realistic...Perhaps you should go back and read all the posts by WVU and SU fans about this game from last summer...everyone expected an ugly defesive type game
-- If you watched the game close I thought WVU obviously had talent....they just need a little time for there young players to get there feet wet

I understand that, Jackson, and I'm not saying these things to be a flamer like all the C-USA folks usually are. With time to cool down following the scary/ugly performances of this weekend, my more honest opinion is that we have a lot of youth top to bottom, from the Cards all the way down to the Bearcats.
But that's my concern and my exact point. The Big East is in for possibly a long season with so much untested talent on each and every team. Other than Louisville, does any team really have a lot of experience on both sides of the ball? I mean even we are young in spots with the exception of our lines. The secondary, quarterback, and a lot of skill position players are going to endure growing pains, be it from being starters for the first time or being new players altogether.
I'm just really concerned how much worse the media craziness is going to get if we don't handle business that people think we should. A lot of this weekend's games fall right into that realm of concern.

Cardinal Empire...I understand your concern and agree with you....However let me point out that this yrs BE is still better then last yrs....Last yrs we still had Temple and one of the better team's in the league (BC) was leaving.....It wasn't a secret that Pasqulini (spelling) was on thing ice and Pitt wasn't thrilled with the job Walt Harris was doing...Now I think we have solid coaches at every school...Hopefully the talent level will be better around the league next yr as compared to this yr just like this yrs is better then last yrs and so on...its going to be a process
-- given the youth in the league its unrealistic to expect in big time wins in week 1....hopefully when a few of our teams get there kids some experance we will be able to knock a few people off in week 3 or 4....or even in bowl games....our bowl week record will be more important then what occured in week 1
