Government is not working for you
Especially not "progressives". They're doing what they want. Light bulbs? It's what they want.

"Livable Transportation" it's what they see fit.

They're much more open about it now

Yes, their approach is to manage congestion to generate longer delays and higher costs. That's now their definition of "livable."

Remember this is all for your own good.

RE: Government is not working for you
These are the same idiots that want the rest of you to live in high density housing along mass transit routes so their wet dreams of controlling you and limiting your choices become reality.

Mass transit is one thing in the densely populated east coast but another altogether in areas where the density is much less. They come up with all kinds of great sounding names for their plans, such as "master planned community" or "sustainable community" but the naked truth is that in areas that are not densely populated, rapid transit is a huge money loser that must be heavily subsidized. They try to camoflage this by trying to convince people to get rid of their cars, live along the transit route and all will be fine. But there are nowhere near enough people to ride the system to make it remotely economically feasible.

Facts like these don't even cause these proponents of mass transit to even so much as pause. To them, it is almost a religion that we must have mass transit. Billions poured down a rathole. We've seen it here in Denver with our light rail system. It will never be self supporting and pay for itself.

That's a myth too. It doesn't work here either! 03-banghead

Got to be honest. I love mass transit. Traffic and parking is so horrific in austin that CapMetro is a life and sanity saver. I just wish the light rail did more.

RE: Government is not working for you
Here in El Paso I found out they want smart developments, this is where they build houses, stores and parks real close to each other so you don't have to drive to do anything. I saw this is a town called Edgewater NJ, next to Fort Lee where I grew up. If you like living above a dry cleaners with a bar across the street and a major movie theater on the corner then feel free to live there. For me, I don't want people all over me 24/7. Did I mention it was expensive and the community overlords control EVERYTHING?

I live in the Allendale part of Austin. I live with in a mile of a Wal-Mart, a small grocery store, a Alamo Drafthouse, a drugstore, about 15 restaurants, a huge park, and a gas station. Not to mention a myriad of other stores. My walking score is 95/100.

It's awesome.

Torch - I wasn't sure if it really works there but that is their narrative and I had no facts either way.

aTxTiger - I'll admit that I enjoy riding our light rail when I go downtown to a ballgame. Easy, quick, much cheaper than finding parking at exorbitant rates. But that $4 or $5 roundtrip ticket to ride probably would run about $10 or more if the subsidy was not there.

Austin's light rail doesnt cost that much. It is 2.75 unless it is a High Ozone Day and then it is free.
