Women's Volleyball Fights To Earn 3-2 Win Over Cal
Trojans forced to earn every point in sweep of Bay Area schools.

Oct. 5, 2002

Box Score

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 1 USC women's volleyball team had to fight for every point in a 3-2 (20-30, 30-28, 30-24, 20-30, 15-13) win over California on Saturday at Haas Pavilion. The Women of Troy's effort kept their undefeated record alive as the Trojans improve to 12-0 overall and 6-0 in the Pac-10. Cal drops to 11-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference race.

After an exhausting five-game match the previous night, the Women of Troy were caught off-guard as the Bears stormed out in game one. Hitting only .132, USC allowed Cal to use an 11-point run to take a dominating 21-9 lead. The Bears held on to their advantage for the easy 30-20 win to start the night.

The Trojans lackluster effort lasted into the start of game two as the Bears pulled out to a 15-10 lead. With Emily Adams at the service line, the Trojans finally snapped out of it and embarked on a five-point run to earn their first lead of the night, 17-16. The Bears responded with a six-point run of their own, but the Women of Troy had found their rhythm and held off the Bears en route to the 30-28 win.

Nothing came easy to the Women of Troy in tonight's match. Cal matched the Trojans point-for-point at the start of game three and with consecutive kills by Cal's Mia Jerkov, the Golden Bears took a four-point lead (18-14). USC slowly chipped away and reached a tie score at 23-23. It was then that the Trojans finally took control and rolled to a 30-24 win thanks to a final 7-1 run.

Despite a 2-1 USC advantage in the match, the battle was far from over. Cal took the first lead in game four and never looked back. The Bears eased to another 10-point win, 30-20, to tie the match.

For a team that had only lost one game prior to arriving in the Bay Area, USC headed into a deciding fifth game for the second straight night. Cal was first on the board thanks to a Jerkov kill and a USC attack error. The Women of Troy knotted the score at 5, 6, 7 and 8, but Cal took another two-point lead at 10-8. After alternating points, the Women of Troy called a timeout then returned to the court to tie the score at 11-11 and 12-12. The Trojans took advantage of a Cal service error upon returning to the court, then reached game point on a kill by April Ross and clinched the win on a final kill by Adams.

Cal out-did the Trojans in nearly every category, but USC garnered key blocks for points in the stretch, out-blocking the Bears 10.0 to 7.0. Ross led the Women of Troy with 26 kills (ties career high) in addition to 14 digs, but Adams was difficult to stop as she hit .567 in the match with 19 kills off of 30 attacks and only two errors. Sophomore Katie Olsovsky led with six blocks.

The Women of Troy return to Los Angeles this week and will travel to Malibu on Tuesday, Oct. 8, to face No. 12 Pepperdine.
