Interesting note from that thread as well, someone called BCSbearcats wrote: ..."We just lost a world class punter, he graduated and
went back to home to Florida. Not sure if he is at USF, FSU etc."
Pat O'Donnell? I've seen some chatter about him not being with the team. Anyone have any insights?

Yeah, that is the case...its been pretty well documented the last few weeks, but I think the people who knew about it, including me, didn't want any negative repurcusions of it coming back if they let slip too early.
TT wants to go to a rugby style punt formation and Pat wanted nothing to do with that seeing as how he has some semblance of pro potential. Leaves us between a rock and a hard place now because everything I've seen of Lloyd recently leaves a lot to be desired.

Wow, that could have a pretty big impact on our team this year. Is this the first opportunity for fans to second guess CTT?
Honest question - what are the pros/cons of the rugby style formation? With a talent such as O'Donnell on the team, why not wait until after he graduates to implement the switch and recruit someone more adept at that skill set?

Well that explains why in the video interview with the Specials Team coach he only talked about having an experienced place kicker and nothing was said about punting.

Rugby style formations allow for a team to get punts out to the sidelines easier than a general apporach and do not leave a huge strain on the blocking formation, as the punter can dictate where he starts his punt routine based on where the pressure is coming from. It also increases the amount of secondary roll on punts, as the angle of impact normally forces the ball to roll in the direction of the kick, whereas a typical spiral punt can bounce just about anywhere without warning.
The cons are simple however. It's a gimicky formation and kick style that wont get punters with good numbers looked at in the NFL, and it can compromise coverage as shanks tend to be downfield and not out of play. These shanks can get to the return man quickly and allow for him to setup returns more fluidly than a long kick with good hangtime. FWIW, both of these are MAJOR problems for Lloyd right now...and that's why I'm worried about him being back there. He can't read the pressure well at all right now, and he tends to have a significantly lower launch angle on his punts, which leads to returners getting their hands on the ball much quicker than they should.

Well if that's the case I don't blame O'Donnell for transfering.

Many thanks for the detailed explanation! Here's hoping we get the issues corrected before Purdue, and/or O'Donnell and CTT decide to mend some fences...

The guys punting today during the scrimmage were not exactly setting the world on fire....
O'Donnell was pretty good on kickoffs, too.

I heard O'Donnell, after getting a degree, just wanted to go back to Florida, be close to home and maybe join another team and do some graduate studies.

Agreed, I can think of a half dozen games over the last 5 years that were won due to superior Bearcat punting.

From a few scrimmage reports, it certainly sounds like we could use the depth at DL.
