OT: NBC/Comcast win Olympic Bid with $4.4 Billion offer
Hopefully for other college athletic conferences, NBC/Comcast spending $4.4 Billion will still leave some $$$$ for mega college athletic contracts for the coming years. (or at least help push the price up against ESPN).

NBC Wins Olympic Broadcast Rights Through 2020

NBC will remain the U.S. television broadcast network for the Olympics through the 2020 Games.

NBC has broadcast every Summer Olympics since 1988 and every Winter Games since 2002. The network won the bid for the four Olympics after next year's London Games for a total of about $4.4 billion.

See link for complete article.

Those are rights that they already owned and will retain so I'm sure they budgeted in.

Well...NBC only owned those up till 2012...hence the open bidding that ESPN/FOX offered up, along with NBC/Comcast.

Some at NBC didn't want to bid again, especially since they lost a lot of $$$ at the Vancouver Games ($223 million)...but they were obviously out-voted.

Ad that Dick Ebersol recently stepped down at NBC Sports, as he produced all of the past Olympic Games for NBC since 1992.

Good news for NBC/Comcast is that the payout per Olympics (approx $1.1 Billion each) was roughly the same cost for their last Olympic bid package ($1 Billion per Olympic Games).

For viewers, the 2014 Winter Games will Russia will suck since sooo much of the coverage will be tape-delay because of the time difference...and most in the USA will already know the outcome of many events when they finally get televised.

In 2016...with the games in Brazil...believe its only an hour time distance (not sure if the difference is because of Daylight Savings time in the USA) so a lot of that coverage will be LIVE and in prime time!

2018 and 2020 Games that NBC also won have not been selected as of yet...so some "risk" as to their value (especially if time difference to the USA is great)

The 2018 Host City will be announced next month. The 3 main candidates are Annecy, France; Munich, Germany and Pyeongchang, South Korea, so there will definitely be time concerns with those games.

NBC has promised that all events will be shown live (either on TV or the internet) beginning in 2014.

I sure wish they'd move that up to 2012 ...

Europe wouldn't be bad (5-6 hour time difference) but South Korea, which already hosted the Summer Olympics back in 1988 might be a long-shot in that case...as the time difference would hurt a lot of TV ratings for live events if it were held back in South Korea again.

You realize that it will have been almost 30 years by that point, right? we hosted twice in 12 years, and were a finalists again for the games in 2012

Olympics will cost NBC

'14 (winter, Sochi): $775 million
'16 (summer, Rio de Janeiro): $1.226 billion
'18 (winter, unknown): $963 million
'20 (summer, unknown): $1.448 billion

Bigger item to note is that FOX, not ESPN, was the 2nd highest bid and they were $1 billion behind NBC's bid.

I hope NBC makes money on the Olympics this time around, or they'll soon be in the market for a new sports director...

This is big for the BE for a potential Comcast deal because they will use the games as leverage to get Versus in more households by putting events on that channel.

Yeah, but what events? I would guess the lions share of hockey during the winter and basketball during the summer, but the major events are still going to be shown on NBC (figure skating, major track events, major swimming, gymnastics)

It doesn't matter, it's the Olympics. I expect Versus to have the 2nd tier summer events; not like CNBC gets stuck w/ boxing. Comcast is expecting to make a profit on this deal based on Versus!

Quote:But the real key is Versus and subscription fees plus subscriber growth.  Comcast will be able to sign up more cable ops to carry Versus and it will have sufficient leverage to generate higher subscription fees.
