Dayton Transfer Juwan Staten Commits to WVU Basketball
WV Illustrated Wrote:[Image: juwaninset.jpg]
As a freshman at Dayton, Staten averaged 8.5 points and 5.4 assists per game in 35 appearances. Following his first season with the team, Staten decided to leave because in his words, the program didn’t help him improve on the court and he felt he would not reach his full potential if he stayed with the Flyers.

Coming out of Oak Hill Academy, Staten was rated a top 50 player in the nation by Rivals. His addition to the WVU roster means the Mountaineers will now have nine new players on the team for the coming season with six true freshmen and three transfers. Staten would have to sit out his first year with the program due to NCAA transfer regulations.

Between Staten and Family and Murray, I'm not sure Huggy makes it through the season. That's a lotta headaches...

Staten is a player with a lot of potential but he doesn't have any semblance of a jumpshot right now. When UC played Dayton earlier in the year, they gave Staten five feet of cushion when he had the ball. That is how broke his jumpshot is. UC was able to neutralize him fairly easily because he just is no threat at all to shoot from outside of 12 feet. He is very athletic however.

Staten is probably not going to be the primary ball handler. Huggins has talked for years about going to a Nova style three guard, two forward attack.

Huggs offense needs a man willing to drive to the hole though, and Staten can do that in spades...

Good luck. Kid is a flippin' locker room cancer and a headcase on a massive scale. His own teammates voted him off the island.

He's a mid major player with a high major personality problem.

What does it profit to gain Staten and lose Pepper?

It's a rhetorical question. 03-wink <sarcasm>

Cheers,
Neil

As someone who lives in Dayton, I can promise you that he is a problem child. That being said, Huggins doesn't take crap from anyone and he certainly made it very clear to Statin and his dad that he won't be hanging out in Morgantown long if he causes problems. This is a classic Huggins transfer who could very well end up being a totally different player when he finally steps on the court in 2 years.

Neil, I can understand the rhetoric. But truth be told, he's not that much different from Pepper. Pepper has wanted to transfer the entire time he's been in Morgantown. He's not been willing to put in the work required to gain playing time, and I don't think the entire team graduating was going to change that much. Pepper did the right things in the defense against Clemson, and that will be his lasting legacy in Morgantown. IMO that's probably for the best. Had he remained for all 4 years, his legacy would not look as good...

Staten is coming into Morgantown knowing its Huggs' way or the highway. If he's too much of a head case, he won't last the 1st semester. But if he has the talent and wants to get into the NBA, the best way to do that is to shut up, toe Huggs' line, and learn how to play basketball. It's his choice...
