Chris Massaro interview yesterday
For those of you in Nashville, you may or may not have heard MTSU AD Chris Massaro's interview The Zone. They were talking baseball and various athletics, and he brought up a proposal to generate interest, attendance and competition. The proposal was this: start the baseball season later, say late March, playing a full season that would end by July 31-August 1. The fall semester would be the "summer" for baseball players, as they could take that semester off if they so choose, but would be enrolled in the spring and summer full semesters. Since summer semesters are becoming more of the norm, he also felt that the cost should be brought to the normal price of a term to help curb the cost. Under this proposal, that would eliminate cold weather games pretty much altogether in the northeast, and even in certain southern states. It would also keep college athletics relevant during the summer months and particularly baseball as it would be the only thing going on.
Now, while it would kill the Sun Belt and A-Sun, the idea does seem interesting. Thoughts?

curious why you think it would kill the a-sun and sun belt? this is an idea that has been batted around for a number of years. sun belt states seem oppossed as it would allow schools in the north a better opportunity to compete

If you had a chance to play in the northeast where people LOVE baseball or Dothan, Alabama, where would you go? Playing in the summer I believe would cause a major shift in recruiting, as players in the south would migrate to larger metro areas and schools for exposure. Granted, with so few scholarships available at the college level it might not be as awful as people think, but I do know that if I were playing baseball at the college level as a summer sport, and someone said you can play in Dothan, Alabama, Deland, Florida or New York City (St. Johns) I'm probably going to New York. But I'm also someone who's always said if Hawaii called me tommorrow and offered me the chance to play four years of football over there, I'm going, and telling the folks to send soap.

It might help the northern schools, but I don't think it will do much for student athletes. Not all schools offer all courses during the summer, so I'd imagine they'd use the fall semester (or quarter) much like they do now. Schools on the quarter system might benefit because the winter quarter would be over before the start of the season.
Professional baseball, on the other hand, has some work to do if this happens. The Short Season Class A and Rookie levels would need serious revamping, as it typically runs from mid-June to mid-September. I would expect if all the teams survive, they get reclassified to Class A. MLB would probably move their draft up so that it follows the conclusion of the season (like the NBA, NHL, and NFL) rather than having it after the start of the following season like it is now.
The amateur summer leagues like the Northwoods League would be in serious trouble, but it might open the way for a professional league in its place-which ironically, means more college players may be turning pro before graduation. Some of the summer leagues have kept Minor League Baseball out of some decent markets, like Green Bay, Wisconsin; St. Cloud, Minnesota; and Owensboro, Kentucky.
