If I stopped and visited more than just a gas station, I consider it a state I have visited. But I believe all of the ones I have shown, I have also spent at least one night in.

As long as I've stepped foot in the state, I count it. However, there's a few of mine that I've got asterisks by: Colorado (layover), Illinois (layover), West Virginia (drove into the state to eat), Kansas (drove into the state to get a snack), and Arizona (stopped at a rest stop and turned around at the next exit). Of the others I've been to, I've stayed a night in every state except New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Ohio (will be staying at least one night in Ohio when UAB plays TOSU next year).
