All ECU Athletics Placed On NCAA Probation
Quote:All ECU Athletics Placed On NCAA Probation
All East Carolina University sports programs have been put on a one year probation by the NCAA after four baseball players and a women's tennis player committed academic fraud.
The NCAA says while working as an academic tutor in the athletics department, the involved women’s tennis player wrote papers for the four baseball players, who submitted the work as their own. The academic fraud included writing a paper for two of the student-athletes, eight papers for another plus a PowerPoint presentation for a fourth student-athlete.
ECU is also getting a public reprimand and censure, and three of those athletes are ruled permanently ineligible to play. Two others are ruled ineligible for competition. The university must also vacate all wins in which the athletes competed in the 2009-10 season.

Agreed. It is ridiculous that they had EVERY sport put on probation because of it.

Not exactly expansion related. I doubt this will have any impact on ECU's prospects.

Too late, they were kicked out last year, we didn't make it the regionals in baseball. Oh, what people fail to say is that ECU cought this on their own. They dicovered it when they did a checked the email of the tennis player. They suspended the players, invistagated themselves, self report the violations to the NCAA. The NCAA accually lowered our probation to 1 year from our self imposed 2 year probation. We also made changes, no stundent athlete can be a tutor now and the atheletic dept. has no more involvement in tutoring players, hire more compliance people. The NCAA and C-USA said that ECU had no lack of instutional control and did a first rate job on scotch quickly on the violations and the self reporting and corrections made.
You can't be every where all the time and keep every kid from making a mistake. You can only try to educate the kids on what not to, find violations quickly and correct them when you find them. It was one student writing papers for others. It wasn't players taking money from agents or sell gifts or taking trips, staying in hotels, driving cars on other's dime.

Atleast the baseball team didn't go to the CWS and have to give up a banner.

Ummmm......check out a few threads below. Also, this is not breaking news. All ECU fans knew about this situation over a year ago, it just took the NCAA this long to get around to handing down their final ruling on the matter.

I don't know, man. Having somebody else write a paper for you strikes me as a far greater moral offense than taking a free hotel room or selling a championship ring.

I agree....But I must say it sucks that an entire athletic department has to be punished for what a student athlete does on the academic side. The only good thing about this is the fact that it did not involve any shady dealings where coaches were cheating to gain an unfair advantage in recruiting. The bottom line is you have 5 student athletes taint the entire athletic program with their selfish and lazy actions.

Apparently, ECU isn't an expansion candidate.

Apparently...you don't know how to follow the rules. Animus stated not to start any more UCF or ECU probation threads......

The major problem the NCAA had was that the tutor who helped them cheat were placed there by the Athletic Dept...so thats where a conflict of interest lies (helping keep some of your athletes eligible, using your paid employee(s) to help them cheat).
It probably would have been different and even a non-NCAA issue (just an ECU academic issue) if these kids were just caught buying term papers over the internet without any help from their Athletic Dept tutors.

Wonder why...as this is a legit news story (NCAA probation, reprimand and censure handed out)...about a potential expansion candidate and not some hearsay.

Kinghtlight, all the ucf threads were moved aswell.......just say'n.
Also, I think it's different if a ECU fan had posted it or a UFC fan had posted the threads about them. None were, they were posted by others to attack both schools, that's wrong and animus did what was right and moved them.

Sounds like ECU handled it well, once they discovered it.
As Nixon and the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa have taught us, it ain't the crime. It's the cover up.
