RICHMOND, Va. - During any sport's season there are many peaks and valleys throughout the year.

Teams try to peak as close as they can toward the end of the season. The VCU track team is doing just that, as they head into the CAA Championships Friday and Saturday at Sports Backers Stadium.

"We talk all year about putting deposits into the account and making a withdrawal at the right time," Head Coach Jon Riley said. "This is the time, this is the meet we work for all year long."

NEW YEAR AND NEW CONFERENCE, BUT SAME GOAL FOR VCU TRACK & FIELD: JUST WIN
[Image: T-FIndoorPreview010413-Main.jpg?max_widt...height=450]

January 4, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. – The turn of the calendar means a new year, but it also means a new start for the VCU Track and Field Program. The Rams are about to embark on the 2013 season in a new conference, but with the same determined effort to compete.

VCU continues its season on Saturday with the Father Diamond Invitational in Fairfax, Va. at George Mason University after the holiday break.

"I think every coach in America worries when their athletes are out on their own," Head Coach Jon Riley said. "We have to get [the athletes] back in decent shape and it is kind of like starting over."

This season, however VCU will have a little added motivation. With the move to the Atlantic 10 conference the track and field program will face new opportunities and challenges. The biggest of those opportunities will be the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championship, an event the Colonial Athletic Association did not offer.

"We have a goal and something to train for," said Riley. "It makes coming back early over the Christmas break a little easier to train and accomplish our goal in mid-February."

[Image: ruffin-big-pic.jpg?max_width=800&amp...height=450]

Sophomore thrower Brandon Ruffin has been busy breaking records again this season, and with the Atlantic 10 Conference Indoor Track Championships approaching Feb. 16-17 in Kingston, R.I., he could be primed for individual gold.

At the New Balance Invitational on Feb. 2, Ruffin broke the school record in shot put with a throw of 17.06 meters (55′ 11.75″). That toss was good for eighth place in a deep field and was a full meter better than his previous best, set just a week earlier.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore George Moore broke the school record with a 1:03.65 and placed seventh in the 500-meter race. Moore also broke the school record in the prelims (1:03.75) to advance to the finals.

In the men's shot put, sophomore Brandon Ruffin advanced to the finals. He placed 17th with a throw of 15.17-meters.

Senior Frank Afriyie advanced in the finals and placed 20th in the weight throw 16.74. Along with Ruffin, Aifryie became the first VCU throwers to advance to the finals in the IC4A event.

On the women's side, sophomore Kiara Porter advanced to the finals in the 400-meter dash. She placed seventh with a time of 54.46 seconds.

QUOTABLE
"Our indoor season came to an end today. The athletes fought hard but came up short. We are proud, but never satisfied because there is always room for improvement. George Moore capped the weekend off with a solid performance in 500-meter finals when he set the school record."
- VCU Track and Field Coach Jon Riley

WHAT'S AHEAD
The Rams return open the spring season with the Ram Invite at Sports Backers Stadium. The meet is March 16.
