Yep, that is last years TV lineup... Went up to Rynearson Stadium for the UT-EMU game end of October...

And is there any indication that makes you think it is going to change? EMU has no chance, zero, none of ever getting above what they are now. I am sorry, but if FBS football is not EMU's focus then why are they spending money on it? We are all in the MAC because we want to be at the top level for football. In my time following the MAC I have never seen an EMU home game that had more than 5,000 fans. It is not like they are just in a slump, NIU went through a slump in the 90's, but was able to build a respectable program. WMU and CMU have been in slumps. EMU isn't even in a slump, it is in the grande canyon of slumps. I do feel sorry for the few EMU fans, but the key word and problem is few.

what kills EMU football is its proximity to UM. That is a tremendous handicap to overcome. The last time I was at EMU for football, the ticket taker had a UM jacket on

RE: Why EMU is still in the MAC
The Answer is: Ohio, Buffalo, Akron, Temple, Ball State, Kent State, Western Michigan.

The Question is: What MAC schools has EMU won a bowl game more recently than?

You'll cry "ancient history," but life is cyclical and ancient history is better than none. EMU is down. They may rise again. And if they do, the fans may come, who is to say otherwise?

1987 California Bowl. I shall never forget!!

In a time when making it to a bowl game is easier than shooting fish in a barrel EMU hasn't come close. Cyclical? Well EMU's cycle is like the planet Pluto's orbit, except Pluto isn't a planet anymore, much like how EMU shouldn't be FBS.

RE: Why EMU is still in the MAC
Just as an example, NIU went 21 years between bowl appearances, and sure enough, if you were to check MAC message boards from during the early Novak years, there were folks clamoring for them to drop out of the MAC. But they turned it around, I saw it live and in person at the Silicon Valley Classic.

EMU is 23 years removed from a bowl.

So...who can really say what tomorrow brings. We know it does not bring EMU being kicked out of the MAC via message board hyperbole.

EMU just this afternoon finished a sweep at highly regarded Louisville. This year the Hurons have also won at ranked Clemson, won 2 of 3 at Kansas, won a slugfest at Michigan State and won 2 of 3 against Michigan.

And still....no body cares, not even EMU students.

I happen to be quite proud of our 11 game win streak for baseball. I was also able to catch one of the wins over U of M. So nice to see right after we beat them in the WNIT as well!

My roommates and several other close friends follow EMU athletics quite extensively. You would be surprised about the growing interest for our athletics programs. Just because students don't post on here does not mean they are not interested...

You might be the only group of students that care. When you can count students at a game on 2 hands, its pretty sad.

I think you will see a surprise turnaround soon. We've been working a lot with athletics to get some things turned around from the student side of things.

I'm not sure which games you've been too but I go to many events and very rarely am I able to count the number of students on one hand. I remember three years ago when I traveled to a game down in Toledo with some friends and the number of EMU students there outnumbered the UT students. Obviously things change as we've witnessed the support for your women's basketball team in the WNIT.

STO Football Schedule

Even more crazy is Akron is in the other 3 games.

Akron signed their own deal with STO on top of the MAC one. So it's not surprising that they are featured more often.

Big Man,

I know it's never going to change. When you don't get the support from faculty/staff/students and your own Board of Regents(some of the prior ones had season tickets to UM or MSU, I'm talking about you Phil Incarnatti), it shows. For years, EMU has been doing everything on the cheap side and what has happend? Losing season after losing season. We're all sick of it.

Seems to me that those clamoring for EMU to get booted from the MAC, represent our own version of birther's! 01-wingedeagle

There is 0 evidence of this potentially happening. 03-shhhh

Its not going to happen under Steinbrechers watch. Given his age and his stewardship of the conference he will be at the helm of the MAC for a long, long time.

EMU is in the MAC because the MAC hopes one day there will be a Southern Michigan University, then they'll have the complete set.

RE: Why EMU is still in the MAC
Football may yet come around although from my point of view scheduling two non Div I opponents at home doesn't do much for me. I loved the Army EMU series and that did generate some decent attendance. Student interest in EMU sports has been nil as many of the students are commuter students or go home for the weekends ie the campus is basically vacant on weekends. However the students have been given little to support in terms of the product on the football field or on the basketball court. However EMU sports does remain the most friendly family opinion in college sports which is not marketed very well in my opinion. You can take the kids to the game without having to mortgage your home to go the games.

RE: Why EMU is still in the MAC
EMU seems to have made some inroads into the Chicago burbs. QB Tyler Benz led Maine South to 2 Class 8A football titles. MLB Darius Moffett was a real steal out of Chicago Public League Power Hubbard. S Shaun Cotton had an NU offer if he would have made the grades.

EMU's biggest challenge has been being able to consistently stop the opponents offense. If they can continue to get talent out of Hubbard, Simeon, Maine South, Schaumburg & Walter Lutheran they can become a competitive team.

That could be also said about 6 MAC FB team in Ohio. 04-chairshot

OSU and UofM both cast a large shadow through their states.

In 1995, EMU had a very promising season and drew very well.

I wish I had some photographs of a nearly full Rynearson Stadium to post. 04-cheers

Plus NIU has 6 BCS programs (NU, WI, IL ND, IA & PU) within 200 miles of DeKalb which accounts for why NIU drew 16K for the 2010 home game after they beat Purdue in West Lafayette and for drawing 14K the 2011 home game with Temple after the Huskies beat Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Only five miles separate UM and EMU's football stadiums. The closest MAC stadium to the Horseshoe is Peden at 68 miles. While OSU and UM both cast long shadows, UM's is darkest right on top of EMU's campus.
