Darrin Williams is Done
Retiring due to injuries. Will be on scholarship this year working with the young guys essentially as a student coach. That sound you just heard was Akise Teauge and Jameel Poteat stepping into the breach.

That is a shame, and also why you take your classwork seriously even if you are a football freak.

Always seemed like a good guy. When he was on the field, more often than not he did a fine job. Luckily UC is stacked with good backs.

Tough break for williams. Hopefully he gets his degree. You have to think it was going to be difficult for him to get a ton of carries with all the talent we're bringing in (plus still being behind Pead one more year.) But it's tough that he had to give up his football career.
On a side note, has anyone heard whether there are any other guys that didn't show/make it to camp?

Rod Coleman and Demetrius Alston did not report. Other than that I think everyone that is expected to be there is there

Tough break for Darrin. I really think he could have done some big things when his opportunity came - presumably next year. Luckily, I think we have enough interesting talent coming in at RB that we should be fine barring additional injuries.

That's too bad. A few years back he could have been the featured back in this program.

Ok, just didn't know if there was anyone else that was expected to be there that wasn't there. In looking at the roster I see that Williams is now removed so it seems it's being updated and I didn't notice anyone else not on there. I see Antwan Darling is still not on there so he must not be with the team. I'd love to know what happened there as he was a guy I was counting on to give us a lot of quality minutes this year.

I've heard that Rod Coleman is more than likely heading to a junior college in Kansas.

I don't mean to seem cold as I will miss Darrin and expected him to see tons of playing time at return man and in the mix as Isaiah's backup but his retirement from the team, like Chazz's transfer, is for the good of the longterm growth of the program. Remember, in 2012 UC is replacing both Collaros AND Pead. At this point with the talent of Poteat and Teague they should get all of the reps as the #2 RB and should give the coaching staff an idea of who they want backing up Pead. If Williams were here he'd probably command more reps as the #2 and would have limited Poteat/Teague's workouts.

It's a moot issue for Williams but in terms of a philosophy, I disagree. There may be exceptions (e.g. blowouts obviously or possibly late in a very bad year), but as a general rule for me - THE BEST AVAILABLE MAN PLAYS (granted "best" can be subjective). As a coach I feel I owe that to the veterans, the team as a whole and the paying fans all of whom are looking for wins NOW. Some guys are playing for a shot to go follow their pro dream while others are playing the final competitive games of their lives. Either way, I think it is wrong to take away what they've worked for and earned in the name of some uncertain "future" season.
If Williams was healthy in this particular case, losing both Pead and Collaros isn't the Apocalypse for this program. There's no reason we can't be winners the year after they leave and Williams and players in similar situations deserve the shot to prove it. Furthermore, it won't hurt Poteat or Teague to learn they aren't going to be given anything - they need to earn playing time just like everyone else and can learn from watching just as Pead did. Now if they beat out Williams - congrats! But they don't get playing time if they don't earn it just because they have the potential to be good someday. Moreover, they know I'll treat them the same way when they are the veterans if we are theoretically looking at another rebuilding year down the road.
