You guys work your butts off so we can all discuss silly things like expansion and tv contracts.

Thank You!

Trying to confirm if 101st Screaming Eagles from Ft Campbell, KY were in fact the ones that took the Navy Seals in

Its interesting, america is the only country that views its military as anything more than just people working a regular job. Im not sure they put themselves in any more risk than a police officer.

Good to hear that osama is dead though.

Tell that to the Marines in Eastern Afghanistan or any veteran (like my two nephews) who invaded Iraq in 2003.

I appreciate the work that the police do every day, but the dangers facing the combat troops is much greater.

Finally, do you have any idea how many risks Seal Team Six took to perform a night helicopter assault on a fortified compound deep inside Pakistan?

I know the risks, Terry. Chopper duty in Nam wasn't easy...

I wonder how this effects Obama's reelection prospects. After all, next year is an election year... 07-coffee3

There are always extreeme cases of everything. It would take a statistical analysis of the % of military members who are hurt or killed and compare that to other professions to get a true read on that. I dont know how it would turn out, but thats the only way to get an objective answer to that.

No disrespect for the police but you do worry about stepping on land mines, being blown up by IEDs, and dodging RPGs. 04-cheers

973 deaths total in Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) from Oct 7 2001 to Feb 7, 2010 out of 90,000*

From - http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/RL32492.pdf

160 deaths in 2010, but an average of 150 deaths for the past 10 years for police officers with 800,000 active in the US. So in ten years the average would be 1,500 out of 800,000 total.

From - http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/201...nt-in-2010

At first glace it looks like the Soldiers have a far higher casualty rate than police officers (~10 casualties per 1,000 as opposed to ~1.9). Of course, I'd need better statistics to feel comfortable about this as I think they probably include all the pencil pusher police in that 800,000 number and the numbers for the military don't include the support forces here in the states. Still, I think it'd still skew heavily that the soldiers job is statistically much more dangerous.

However, I think it's telling that with both Soldiers and Police, accidents cause more deaths than shootouts. I think one of the leading causes of death for police is traffic accidents and training/flying/driving accidents cause a significant portion of the soldiers deaths, along with, unfortunately, suicide :(

Kudos to all who serve! It took some time, but the killer is finally brought to justice. It doesn't end the fight against terrorism, but it is a huge victory nonetheless.

RE: I know there are a lot of military here...I'm not but I am very proud of you guys!
Please do not belittle the training and real world issues faced by the military. In the mid 90's, while TDY to Europe, I was under orders to not travel in uniform, dress as much like the locals when off base, attempt to speak the native languages and we still averaged 1 act of terrorism per month, including blowing up a fellow GI's car. This was at a base in a loyal, allied nation.

Additionally, the training our military goes through is as close to real world combat as can be. Live ammunition, heavy vehicles, aircraft, all orchestrated to make us the best causes many injuries and some deaths just to get to th epoint of shipping our kids off to Iraq, Afghanistan and several other hot spots. Our troops then face the above rates of KIA.

Being a cop or a fireman is no less important, but probably less dangerous than our combat troops face, and usually in a place far away from home with little or no friendly faces besides your unit.

Kudos to all the troops. Thanks to Presidents Bush and Obama. Thanks to the Intel crews. Thank you, God, for giving us a great country and giving us great protection.

Thank you to all of the current troops and vets and a special thank you to those that unfortunately served w/ me. We had the times of our lives serving this nation.

Also a shout out to the firemen and police that serve our streets on a daily basis.

Military, Cops and Firemen are all important and put their life on the line every day.

BTW, I'm attending a Memorial Service tomorrow for a pilot from my base killed a few days ago by a Psycho Afghan Pilot...he killed 9 US Service-members in a rage inside a briefing room. One of the Service-members was a woman.
