What the heck does the NFL have an Mallet?
Obviously, it's something because these guys do their homework, big time. Was just out tonight with someone who's son lives in Fayetteville and says its well known that Mallet like to drink, partake of weed, and act like a "gangster". Still how does it make him different than many of the players that were taken in the first round? No way teams pass on a talented quarterback based on "rumors". Obviously there is something they see as very significant. I have tended to believe he is just an immature kid who needs to do some growing up. Must be more than that. I have felt he'd be fine once he got to the league. Apparently, NFL owners aren't convinced and weren't willing to risks millions on that.

Ryan The Gangsta Mallett. Dude, that's funny.
I'm thinking it's more that he's a slow 6'-7", that happens to have a rocket for an arm but no stabilizers. And he's only played a couple dozen or so college games, and he couldn't win the Big Game.
Or he's a Gangsta. Either one.

You could be right. I may have been manipulated by the Arkansas media as much as everyone else. Maybe he is just not that good. Still, some supposedly reputable NFL folks have been quoted as saying that he would be the #1 pick if not for "off the field issues". And to be honest, I don't know a thing about the quarterbacks selected last night, other than Cam Newton.

No less an expert on quarterbacks such as Phil Simms was quoted on a radio show as saying if Mallett was no a Top Ten pick, he'd quit.
I wonder if he's looking for a job.

Tom Brady's 40 times is one of the two slowest times in history for quarterbacks, and it hasn't hurt him. Of course he didn't get drafted until the sixth round, probably because he was too slow. And Peyton Manning couldn't outrun me. Well maybe me, but not any other NFL quarterbacks (except maybe Brady). And he started several games at Michigan when Chad Henne got hurt, and started two full seasons at Arkansas. That's a lot of big time competition, and he broke all the passing records at Arkansas. I think there's something in his demeanor they just didn't like, and if you notice, Newton, Locker, Ponder and Gabbert were all very personable and charismatic. They kept harping that Ponder was working on his second master's degree. How many degrees did Johnny Unitas, Bobby Layne or Jim McMahon have. If that's the criteria for picking a quarterback, they could find a lot of math majors at MIT who probably have doctorates. I think they just didn't feel comfortable with his "perceived" image being the face of their franchises. They might be sorry when they have to play against him on the football field.

Do you really think Mallet has as much football smarts as Brady or any of the top tier QB's. His arm is probably better but other than that what has he got. Can't run and melts in big play situations.

Yes. I think he has as much or more "football" smarts than Brady coming out of college. Playing for Petrino, you have to have a tremendous knowledge of the entire offense or you don't play. Several of the experts, including Jon Gruden, who have worked with him always comment how high his football I.Q. is. And not many pocket quarterbacks throw the ball well when they're in the grasp of 300 pound defensive tackles. No. I've heard experts say that it's 70% off the field perceptions and 30% foot speed. The kid is just going to have to prove he's mature enough to handle being an NFL quarterback, and I believe he will.
