EMU Aaron has it right, almost every experienced Div I or Div II head coach who thought about interviewing or did ended up backing out of further consideration of the job. Its a sad legacy of Barnes, Boone and Ramsey. I did note EMU had three players who finished as honorable mention for All MAC Academic so it that respect Ramsey left the program better than it was. But honestly EMU program is viewed in basketball as a bottom Div I program there hasn't been a good product on the floor in ages. Murphy will have an uphill battle.
I wonder if he will clean off the current roster similar to what the Toledo coach did last year when he was named coach.

Good Question about cleaning up the roster. I'm wondering if there are still any good recruits out there that he can bring in at this late date. No JUCO's please! Someone suggest (I believe Steve) that he may have some B type players still out there looking for a scholarship, would be nice.

Look at Rivals for 2011 for Syracuse these a few B type players mentioned in connection with Sycracuse that's haven't signed.

B List-http://rivals.yahoo.com/syracuse/basketball/recruiting/recruit-search-results

Still a few in Michigan not signed.

If I may suggest:

Programs go through peaks (from say '88 to '98) and valleys (the last 10+ years) but that doesn't mean that peaks will always be peaks and valleys always valleys.

EMU is a VERY good opportunity for a hard working coach who wants to build a program which is down but could easily head up for better days.

Ditto Toledo. (that is a 'diamond in the rough' program). A program in the pits but very significant upside (maybe the highest in the MAC).

Agree. EMU is down right now but the potential for a good hoops program is high. Great facilities, good recruiting base, etc...

It just takes the righer person running the program to make it become reality.

Hm I guess the opportunity wasn't that attractive to some established Div I coaches or even Grand Valley. That's why they withdrew their names after consideration.

I agree re facilities, recruiting area. All of this has been squandered in the recent past.

I hope Murphy is the man.

Clean up the roster? I hope NOT. The guys came to EMU and are not personal property of Coach Ramsey. EMU should keep the committment they made.

This brings up an interesting point...
I'm hearing more and more that there is no longer such thing as a four year scholarship. That it's annually renewed. This isn't something unique to EMU, but at all schools...
Is this the case?

Scholarships are renewed annually. If the athlete does not perform academically they lose their scholarship. If the athlete does not fit in with the program the coach can pull them from the roster. RE set a good example to that last year.

If the player doesn't perform? Given EMU's history, it's more likely the U didn't perform and used poor judgement in offering scholarships.

Nobody recruits a kid by telling them they can have a scholarship for one year and then we'll see what happens. The coach is the representative of the U and promises should be kept.

When English arrived he made a big show about committment and dedication, then one of the first things he did was pull a scholarship that had been offered and accepted by a student from NY named D.J. Young.

Suppose EMU did this?
EMU: We gave you a scholarship because we thought you were going to be pre-med.
Student: I'm barely keeping my 3.0 because the sciences are so tough. Med school looks pretty bleak. I'm thinking of becoming a teacher instead.
EMU: We want diversity and we've got too many education majors. You can't perform so we're yanking your scholarship.

The university has an obligation to keep it's promises.
