Jacksonville State to Explore Move Up!
http://www.jsugamecocksports.com/new...418110329.aspx

Quote:The Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees passed a resolution during Monday's quarterly meeting that allows the University to explore the possibility of moving the Gamecock football team to the Football Bowl Subdivision, provided there is an opportunity in the future.

All of Jacksonville State's athletic teams currently compete in NCAA Division I, with the Gamecock football team playing in the Football Championship Subdivision.

“The most important thing is to be in a position to take advantage of any opportunities that may arise in the future,” said Athletics Director Oval Jaynes. “It's not like we are planning on leaving the Ohio Valley Conference next month, and it shouldn't be taken that way.

“But, we do want to be in a position to explore and review any opportunities that may arise in the future,” added Jaynes.

Jacksonville State has been a NCAA Division I member since 1995 and a member of the Ohio Valley Conference since 2003, where the Gamecocks have won 44 OVC Championships since joining the league – which is the most by any school in the conference over that time span.

Here is a full copy of Resolution 538 that was passed during Monday's Board of Trustees Meeting:

WHEREAS, Jacksonville State University has a very proud and rich tradition of Intercollegiate Athletics that dates back over 100 years; and

WHEREAS, Jacksonville State University has been very successful on the fields of competition as a member of National Collegiate Athletic Association, both at the Football Championship Subdivision and the Division II levels; and

WHEREAS, Jacksonville State University joined the Ohio Valley Conference in 2003-04 and has solidified itself as the preeminent athletic program in the Conference by winning 44 OVC Championships over the last seven years; and

WHEREAS, our athletic teams, fans, students, alumni and everyone affiliated with this University has expressed an interest to explore the possibility of moving our football program to the Football Bowl Subdivision, provided there is an opportunity in the future; and

WHEREAS, all other Jacksonville State University teams already compete at the highest NCAA level, only football competes at a lower subdivision level;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that it is the intent of the Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees to explore all opportunities to move the Gamecock Football Program to the Football Bowl Subdivision level.

Maybe they can get in the Sunbelt after CUSA takes FAU to replace UCF.

The Sun Belt hasn't shown much interet in JSU.

With the new rules about having to have a conference invitation before you can move up it certainly makes it a lot tougher to complete the transition from FCS to FBS. If Georgia State is serious about moving up, you guys need to get your program in order quickly before the Sunbelt is full. I do think you'd be a good fit for that league.

Panama,

As a GSU fan, let me get your opinion on something. What would you think of GSU becoming part of a hypothetical conference whose purpose would be to create essentially a true shadow SEC that replicated it's model of success but on on a smaller level?

It takes the largest/most promising non AQ public school (Tulsa excepted), who are not likely to receive an invitation to one of the six AQ conferences, from the 12 states of the old south. It takes the success of the Big10 and SEC and replicates it by having all but one school be a large public university and adds the element of state vs state competition since each individual school is the representative of it's state in this league.

I believe it would actually become a very passionate and entertaining league in just a little over a decade.

Yeah sorry, I'd rather stay in a raided C-USA than that conference.

Obviously ECU believes they have a chance at bigger and better things, and maybe they do. So if not them, plug in Charlotte and the concept still works.

Same for Memphis if they feel they have a shot at the BE (however long it may be), plug in MTSU.

The idea is the same though, one school per state, large public U's except for one private, state vs state and southern pride.

I like it if for no other reason its a southern football first conference. That would be pretty cool. One can dream.

Yeah, where are all these schools going to go? I guess many could go to the WAC. Off the top of my head, who is jumping up or planning/thinking about moving up.

Jax State
Umass
South Alabama
App State
Texas State
Texas San Antonio
Georgia State
Charlotte

I am sure I am missing a few.....isn't like Denver U also trying to move up?

I can see the vision in this and understand your point, but for ECU I would prefer a new conference that was more of an east coast regional league. That league is not much better geography wise than C-USA.

Point of order:

Middle Tennessee is not only larger than Memphis by several thousand students, outside of men's basketball, we also have a better athletic department.

UMASS is set as a football only member of the MAC

South Alabama is already in the Sun Belt

Texas state and UTSA are both set in the WAC

Denver, who doesn't play football, is already division 1 and is moving from the Sun Belt to the WAC

I'm sure UAB fans will be along soon to tell us that due to their exceptional basketball and chess team, they are too good for this league as well 05-stirthepot

But if so, Troy it is!
