What's with the gold around Chattanooga, TN? UT Chattanooga is FCS not FBS.

Latest map from the Common Census Map project showing relative strength of fan bases:

As it says, the map is based on only 28,000 votes. But it does give a good idea of relative areas of strength for most teams. Click on the map for a larger view.

Apparently, our fanbase in Missouri is bigger than our fanbase in Pennsylvania. I think we've had one player from Missouri in the last 5 years. Random?

The weighted 'power' of high-voting fans pushes results for smaller bases away from their region within the mapping program. PSU pushes out Temple, UM pushes out EMU to Montana, ect.

That's a pretty cool map, I was trying to look for something like it, nice find.

The selections for NC are interesting. The green must be for UNC Charlotte but they don't even have a football team yet, much less cover the vastness of the area given. They are still in the preparation stages. Appalachian St. is missing and they are a far bigger program than anything Charlotte has today.

And I forgot to mention the gold selection...UNCW would have been my guess as well...but they don't have football either.

On the New York/Vermont border, obviously.

What do you suppose that orange blob in Maine represents? Rutgers? Buffalo? It's larger and less random looking than the other random blobs. The purple on Long Island has to be Notre Dame.

We've got some work to do to clean up the mess in New England.

So why is Northwestern pushed out instead of NIU? Why aren't Arky State, MTSU, UAB, ULM, LA Tech, etc. somewhere in Hawaii? 95 is comparable or better than schools like Vandy, Nevada, Oregon State, Fresno State, Navy, Louisville, etc. I guess I could understand it pushing us to Ohio or Virginia, but Missouri?

RE: [CONTEST] - Guess Who Is FBS? Who is NOT FBS?
Once you're pushed out of your area of highest concentration, it's pretty much up to chance. They're not working with a gigantic amount of responses, judging from the numbers. A pair of Temple grads moving to an empty quadrant of Missouri, with 2 children currently attending Temple, would probably be enough to claim that location if everyone else in town ignored the phone call from the out-of-state number on Caller ID.

Also note how the northern states are more solidly colored than the southern states. My guess is that's because they had more pollsters operating in the north, so there was less room for aberrations to sneak in. I doubt that BC, Rutgers and Syracuse have larger football fanbases than everyone in the SEC like the map's numbers suggest, so I'm going to assume that there were fewer people down there polling.

It's weighted on the proximity of other responses. NW is pushed out because it is in Chicago near so many who responded for IL/ND. NIU is an hour from Chicago with it's 'base' being in Rockford and the Fox River Valley so Chicago responses don't effect NIU. Similarly, notice the others schools you list are rural Southern schools (except UAB). The lack of many hundred votes for SEC schools in urban areas doesn't push out the non-AQ's like in the north, as LMM pointed out. Tulane is another urban school that was 'pushed' out by LSU reponses in NO, SMU is 'pushed' out by B12/TCU responses in DFW, and Temple is 'pushed' out by PSU votes in Philly.

It isn't meant to be an exact representation of the market each university reaches. There are no other FBS schools I know of in Jersey. 03-lmfao

Oh, well...I don't imagine Tulane's fan base is properly represented in the right area of the country. 03-lmfao
