RE: Poll: pick your top 3 hoops candidates
My wild guesses:

1). Dan Fife,

2). Tony Jones,

3). Brian Dutcher, my 'out of the box' candidate.

One is a division I HC and two have deep experience as asst coaches in the midwest and ALL three know MI like the back of their hands.

I also agree with Stephens.

I'm almost surprised he didn't get the Kent job. I thought he would.

There are probably at least a half dozen very good, 'pick a name out of a hat' candidates.

RE: Poll: pick your top 3 hoops candidates
Not sure on how this will come out, please post bio:

UTsports.com 53
Associate Head Coach Tony Jones the staff
Tony Jones is in his sixth season as an associate
head coach at Tennessee and his 10th year on
Bruce Pearl's coaching staff.
Jones' responsibilities include recruiting,
scheduling and working with the Vols' perimeter
players. An instrumental force in landing some
of the influential players in his team's successes,
he has made in-roads to signing a number of the
top players in the nation. Three times during his
tenure at Tennessee, Jones helped the Vols sign
recruiting classes ranked among the top 10 in the
nation. Those classes have included the likes of
first-team All-SEC performer Wayne Chism and
McDonald's All-Americas Scotty Hopson and Tobias
Harris.
"Tony has prepared himself to be a head
coach," Pearl said. "His experience provides him
with a wealth of knowledge, and his ability to
communicate has made him an effective teacher."
With Jones helping to build its annual slate
of opponents, Tennessee's schedules have ranked
among the nation's toughest. The Vols have
faced—and beaten—many of the country's premier
programs, including teams such as Memphis,
Gonzaga, Texas, Ohio State and Kansas.
Along with such ambitious scheduling—Tennessee's
average year-end RPI over the last five
seasons is an SEC-best 12.4—comes prominent
national exposure, as UT has played 74 games on
national television over the past five years.
Jones came to Tennessee with 12 years of collegiate
coaching experience after spending four
seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
(UWM) as an associate head coach. Prior to joining
the UWM staff, Jones spent five seasons at
Toledo and three years at Buffalo
.
In his 17 seasons of collegiate coaching, Jones
has helped direct his teams to 10 postseason tournament
bids, including seven NCAA Tournament
appearances the last eight years. Four times (2005,
2007, 2008 and 2010) in the past six years he has
coached teams appearing in the Sweet 16 of the
NCAA Tournament—and the Vols advanced to
the Elite Eight for the first time in program history
last season.
Tennessee has experienced unprecedented success
during the five years with Jones on the bench.
The Vols have averaged 25.2 wins during those
seasons and have won three SEC Eastern Division
championships. The 2008 team captured the
overall SEC title outright for the first time in 41
years, won a school record 31 games and earned
the first No. 1 ranking in school history.
Each of his five seasons at UT has resulted in
NCAA Tournament appearances, including three
trips to the Sweet 16. Two times the Vols have
received No. 2 seeds in the NCAA Tournament—
the highest in school history.
After helping sign a class that was ranked sixth
nationally in 2006, Jones was named one of the
top recruiters in the nation by Rivals.com. In
2007, Rivals.com ranked Jones as one of the topfive
assistant coaches in the nation.
Jones got his first taste of coaching at his alma
mater, Detroit Southwestern High School, where
he served as an assistant varsity coach while also
serving as head junior varsity coach from 1986-
91. During this time he coached future NBA stars
Jalen Rose (Phoenix Suns), Howard Eisley
(Denver Nuggets) and Voshon Lenard (Portland
Trailblazers), leading them to the mythical
USA TODAY national title in 1991. He also
served as head coach of Team AAU Michigan for
three years (1991-93), posting a 35-1 record and
capturing two AAU state championships.
Jones was an All-City star at Southwestern and
went on to earn All-Conference honors at Fisk
University in Nashville. He earned a bachelor's
degree in health care administration from Concordia
(Mich.) University.
Jones and his wife, Pam, have four children—
Tony II, Jamaal, Mercedes and Porscha. His
brother, Bill, played for the NBA's New Jersey
Nets.

RE: Poll: pick your top 3 hoops candidates
Dane Fife is proven winner as head coach with Michigan-Midwest ties (unlike Boone).

Rest of your candidates mentioned are unproven assistants, just like Ramsey was.

Do you want to go with a recycled former header at "big name" school like NIU did with Patton?

Does Fife have recruiting ties in the state of Michigan? His current roster has no Michigan kids, doubt he has signed any during his tenure at IPFW.

The guy with the recruiting tires appears to be Mann recently from Dayton

If you look at Rivals for 2011 Fife and Ramsey were looking at some Fort Wayne guys neither have the grades.

Lets post some bios of some of the candidates. Jones has some MAC assistant coaching I believe Toledo.

I don't want to sound cynical, even in a positive way, but wonder if Gragg had an advantage being in Houston with all of those coaches NOT having a vacancy. 03-idea

IF he had a vacancy then he'd probably have to be very, very careful talking to any coaches for fear that if he talked to employed coaches without asking permission of their school it would be tampering.

Without a vacancy he is simply involved in professional networking which is a good thing.

I'd bet a number of asst coaches, etc. might have introduced themselves 'just in case' a vacancy opened up say 'next year'...

RE: Poll: pick your top 3 hoops candidates
Top 3 wishlist...

1) Cornell Mann (assistant coach at Dayton). Detroit guy, extensive MAC experience as a player and assistant coach, good recruiter with Detroit connections, and cost-efficient. Also reported to be a fiery guy who players love.

2) Tony Jones (assistant coach at Tennessee). Another Detroit native. Has expressed an exciting desire in taking the job. Brief experience as a head coach when Pearl was suspended (went 5-3 with wins over Georgia and Vandy, and an OT loss to Florida). Wants to play full court, fast-paced basketball, which would be a nice change for us after sitting through Ramsey's slow, inefficient offense for years.

3) Todd Lickliter (former Iowa head coach). Former EMU assistant. Success at the mid major level with Butler. Midwest recruiting ties. Inheriting a rough situation at Iowa that he couldn't turn around might be an issue. I'd rather have the two guys mentioned above, but his experience here and the strength of his Butler teams wouldn't exactly have me pessimistic if he were hired.

I think Lickliter and his style of play would be great for EMU. It's a decent name, and he has had D1 success However, he may be looking for a better mid major job than this....regardless...I still believe that there is a man in waiting. There has to be considering the timing of the hire.

RE: Poll: pick your top 3 hoops candidates
I have a hard time believing we are going to pull a coach from anyplace else given: 1. The lack of time until signing day 2. The lack of talent currently on the roster 3. The lack of money to make 1 and 2 go away. We are going to get a coach who is currently without employment (which is not a real problem as there are many good coaches out there) which makes Dane Fife a pipe dream IMO.

I agree that probably Gragg has someone really, really in mind and could have talked with him in Houston socially, but not in terms of his interest in EMU.

It drives me nuts when someone posts, "I wonder if Gragg has candidates in mind..."

ADs always know there is a possiblity of having to replace EITHER a very unsuccessful or very successful coach.

To paraphrase the expression, "We are ADs and that is what we do (hire and fire coaches)..."

Actually, on these boards, the statement: "I hope Gragg has some names in mind" is more of an introductory statement to start a thread then a profound statement.

I think I'm going to add Lickliter to the top of my list.

I reviewed his record and most convincing was a Sweet 16 appearance his SIXTH year at Butler, which would have been HIS recruits, not Thad Matta's.

My other two picks are, in no particular order, Tony Jones and Dane Fife.
