Dennis likes to watch hoops open gyms which quite frankly I'm not sure are a good 'leading indicator' of success in either team practices or D-I games. I'm being understated here. Maybe if we signed a Marcus Kennedy ('91) he'd stand out because he was a 'man among boys'. Same with Boykins. A true talent. Being kind, none of the new '10/'11 recruits stood out as a 'man among boys'.
Unless there is a big time player there probably the players who bring their 'A' game look best and those with their 'B' game, not so good.
But does a rising senior bring his 'A' game to an open gym?
Spring game, though, is as good a predictor as we'll get in football.
What it does is give all the players on campus a chance to show, comparatively, their skills. E.g., Benz vs Gillette. kicker vs. kicker.
And first real looks at the redshirts and transfers.
Also see what kind of UNITS English will show. First team OL, first team DL, etc.
Still anxious to see Pollard and LThomas in the DB. I'm still giddy hoping that LThomas, Pollard, Cotton, Strange, Scott, Pali, Taylor, etc. can, along with other returnees, become one of the best defensive backfields in the MAC.
I'll be watching on EagleVision and 'taking notes" trying to determine what we will know next Sunday evening that we don't know today.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised more haven't attended the practices with pads and came here and said, "redshirt frosh lineman, x, was dominant in OL/DL drills, or Benz's arm is like a ? or he runs like ? Or our new LB, x, hit like a truck today...
Just haven't got a lot of vibes other then a few like Pollard, the WRs, Thomas, Cudworth, etc.
Haven't heard ONE word on Benz...
