ECU Campus Master Plan Highlights
Quote:Health Science Campus will expand within its current footprint,
creating a hub of buildings close to each other and supported by a
student services building and perimeter parking decks.

Cancer Center would be spread out from this complex to allow for
direct parking access to it, and be tied to the campus via trail.

Police and Millenial Campus would be located in the warehouse
district near 10th St Connector. Shipping is already located there.

Hotel/Convention Center and Performing Arts Center would be located
on 1st St and Reade across from the Town Common. A Mixed Use
Streetscape would be created going back down Reade toward 5th and
would include a parking deck, Alumni Center, and a few other
buildings. Proposed to eliminate one way traffic pattern on Reade
and Cotanche to both having two way traffic. This downtown campus
may be linked via pedestrian bridge over 5th that can follow grade
of the Hill. Ravine would be used as green space connector from
Town Common to Main Campus.

ECU would strategically expand MC to 10th Street by acquiring
businesses on 10th St side. New Student Center, expansion of Rec
Center and improved entrance off of 10th Street to allow for bus
dropoff (replacing Christenbury steps).

Business Building would be located on corner of 10th, Cotanche and
Evans with its attached parking. Would provide "gateway" at
Cotanche and expand footprint to Evans moving campus within a block
of proposed Millenial campus.

10th Street would be divided and landscaped with pedestrian islands
to allow crossing. Christenbury would be leveled and new Science
Building built in its place. Existing surface parking around Austin
would be removed and converted to open green space for pedestrian
use. Car access on MC would be limited to just Wright Circle off
5th St and traffic circles off 10th St. Umstead and Slay would
return to dorm use.

Belk Hall will be leveled, College Hill straightened and high rise
Suite style dorms built on either side. A pedestrian bridge would
be built at top of new College Hill Drive to cross RR tracks and
link students safely to the athletic campus.

No answer on Stratford Arms, but it is obvious that park and ride
parking seems to be ideal and also be utilized during athletic
events. Interesting comment about potentially using Rec fields
behind Stratford/Allied Health for grass parking during football,
problem being irrigation and configuration of fields. A real
question as to whether these fields are necessary with North Rec.
Seems this could be a rather large surface park and ride area. ECU
is sudsidizing about 30% of cost of busing to new apt complexes, but
explanation was made that you would rather have buses then all of
the car trips.

Quote:I am pushed for time, so here are the cliff notes.

Academic A Building - the new Business and Education building - they
want on Cotanche and 10th, across from McDonalds and Sheets. It will
eventually have a parking deck on it.

Eventually they want to push the MC south to 10th St creating a new
well defined edge of campus

Middle part of Founders St will be gone. Faculty Way and Dixon Dr
would leave. They would create a bus hub on the south end of
Founders, creating a loop. North Founders would loop around Wright
Circle.

Median on 10th St to slow down traffic

Possible pedestrian bridge over 5th near West End/Fletcher to connect
the new growth on Reade St.

Hotel/Conference would go on the westside of Reade @ 1st. The
Visual/performing Arts would go on the east side.

Alumni Center on eastside of Reade at 4th and 3rd.

College Hill Drive would go straight to Dowdy. A new Dorm would be
built, not in the same footprint.

New Press box.

A lot more I didn't write down. And I'll answer anything I know. But
wanted to put this out now.

Acquisition of Stratford Arms would bring a revision of the Master Plan

I have some reservations about expanding campus to run the length of 10th Street only because it implies the acquisition of McDonald and Wendys. Kinko's, the Mexican restaurant, the ECU parking Building, the Baptist Campus Building~ I would think would all be easy to absorb and create the 5th street esque border to campus... you know with a running hedge and signage and sculptures etc...

But We have a Chili's and Chicfil-A in the heart of Campus so rather than trying to buy those two lucrative businesses... couldn't we just try to incorporate them some how?

I don't think its economically appropriate to replace that prime McDonald's location with a visitors center...
Its ironic to be that the building that would be going up across from McDonalds and Sheets would be the business (& education) building seeing as how no actual business has been able to survive there.

The constant failure of businesses that are adjacent to campus baffles me! I assume the property taxes and rent must just be too overwhelming.

What was discussed regarding a Greek village?...

I wonder how much a buy out of the two restaurants would cost? Especially the McDs as that was just renovated in the last 3 years.
