Political Correctness still reigns with the play-in games
The committee has clearly always had marching orders from the NCAA to ensure the MEAC champ never faces the SWAC champ in the NCAA play-in game despite those two representatives clearly being the worst two teams in many previous seasons. The NCAA decided the connotation of having two HBCU's in a "play-in" game was too much.
I foolishly thought that might go out the window this year since we now have six 16 seeds and four playing on Tues/Wed. However, UNC-Ashville takes the bullet for the NCAA this season and falls on the PC sword by illogically being placed in a play-in game. I included the Pomeroy/Sagarin ratings below for the six 16 seeds.
UNC-Ashville (#143/#155)
Boston (#169/#168)
Hampton (#211/#179)
Arkansas-LR (#210/#207)
TX-San Antonio (#219/#220)
Alabama St (#295/#308)
Ashville and Boston should clearly avoid the play-in round right? Better make that Boston and Hampton since Ashville is clearly one of the worst 4 in the tournament.
I know it's nothing the Big East ever has to worry about, but don't ever believe the committee head if he claims they don't have orders from the NCAA offices.

I don't think we can assume that political correctness kept Hampton out of the play-in game. Hampton was 23-8 against D-1 competition, including a win over #51 Colorado State. Asheville is 16-13 against D-1 competition with no Top 100 wins. Their RPIs are very comparable - Hampton is 153, Asheville is 148. Both have 5 sub-200 losses.
Computer rankings are just one factor among many that the committee reviews when it comes to selecting teams, and to seeding. Look at Utah State, at a #12 seed but with an RPI of #15.
Hampton also beat Liberty, a team that swept Asheville. In fact, Hampton was 3-0 against Asheville's Big South conference, and also has a win against Boston U.
I could see the argument if Hampton was clearly inferior, but it seems at best a toss-up to me. Asheville doesn't have much room to complain.

It's either Boston U. or BU. No one calls it just 'Boston', even though that's what the jersey says. Go Terriers!
