OT--ND/Temple 3 game series
2 games@ ND, 1 in Philadelphia (Lincoln Field).

Sources: Owls to play Notre Dame in football
POSTED: February 16, 2011

Temple will announce on Thursday that its football team has scheduled what is believed to be a three-game series with Notre Dame, sources familiar with the situation have told the Daily News.

One of those will be held in Philadelphia, although the sources weren't sure of the timetable for either that or the ones in South Bend. Notre Dame's schedules for the next two seasons are already set, so the earliest it could start is 2013.

The last time the Fighting Irish played here was 1993, when it beat Navy at Veterans Stadium (58-27).

The Owls already have a similar arrangement going with Penn State, which will visit Lincoln Financial Field this season. The Nittany Lions were last here in 2007. Not shockingly, it was a sellout. The Notre Dame date will be as well. And even if a large portion of the crowd figures to again be rooting for the away team, it's still a major coup for a program that usually draws in the mid to high teens. And the games at Notre Dame will be on national television, since the Irish have their own network. The one in South Philly should at least be shown regionally. You can't put a value on that kind of exposure.

This deal has been making the rounds for some time. Now it's about to become reality.

Notre Dame, which has made multiple appearances at the Meadowlands and in Baltimore, has never played Temple.

The Irish hosted Western Michigan last October. It was the first time they'd played a team that's now in the Mid-American Conference since 1920.

Lincoln Field IS where Temple plays ALL of their home games. So it isn't like some kind of "let's move the game to the big downtown stadium" type of game.

Discounting leather-helmet days, will this be the first time ND plays at a MAC team's home field?

That's quite a coup for Temple. Should make a lot of money when ND visits Philly, and the two games at Notre Dame will give them national exposure.

Maybe scheduling these kinds of games also helps show themselves in a better light for the Big East, if Villanova doesn't come through?

I suspect that Temple is wisely building bridges in case Villanova decides to stand pat.

No wonder Notre Dame doesn't schedule many Big East teams, it looks like they get plenty of Northeast exposure without it (Yankee Stadium vs. Army, this series in Philly, games in Boston).

Notre Dame is the exception to the 'rule' that the northeast corridor only cares about the NFL. They have substantial followings in all those big cities ...

ND will have more fan in Philly than Temple will. It won't be a home game for the Owls...

Don't forget Navy, too (with games typically in Baltimore/DC or the Meadowlands). That's the one opponent that's never ever being dropped from ND's schedule.

Good question. Also, surprised they would make this deal, IF Nova was elevating.

ND does the strangest things some times.

ND would never in a million years take so much as a one or two year break from playing Navy or USC, that's for certain.

RE: OT--ND/Temple 3 game series
Most ND fans are not in favor of playing Temple.

http://www.ndnation.com/boards/index.php?football

The following are just my guesses/opinions on ND's thinking regarding this issue:

ND thinks that this series is beneficial since it is a 2 for 1 deal, with the "1" being at an NFL stadium in a big Northeastern city where lots of Irish fans live.

It is the same reason ND likes to play at the Meadowlands, Gillette Stadium and FedEx Field.

They see value in playing at these venues, along with Yankee Stadium.

It allows their fans in the Northeast access to games and also allows these venues to become de facto "home" games, filled with a majority of Irish fans.

ND also values its long running series with Pitt and likes to play at Heinz Field every other year (although this is a true Pitt home game). There are lots of ND fans in Western Pennsylvania.

I don't think that ND has any desire to play Villanova, even if it upgrades. It may be too soon after Villanova changes from FCS status (assuming it does so).

Ok, i agree that all of these things matter, but let's cut to the chase: Those same fans who lament playing Temple are also the same ones who will be calling for the coach's and AD's scalps if Kelly doesn't start winning 10+ games a year. And no one, not even schools like Oklahoma, Alabama, and Ohio State, do that without a significant number of patsies on the schedule.

Last year, just about the entirety of ND's schedule (i believe 11 out of 12 teams, counting probationary USC) was bowl-eligible. That's just too brutal .... Temple, even though they too have technically qualified for bowls recently, is a breather.

RE: OT--ND/Temple 3 game series
Quo:

Lol, if you read the Rock's House message board, you now have a view into the mindset of many ND fans. They want:

--A 100% grad rate for players;

--One of (if not the) toughest schedules in the country;

--No Jumbotron, Field Turf, names on jerseys, athletic table, athletic dorms, JUCO's, incoming transfers ,etc.... (the athletic table was installed this past season; ND has none of the others);

--A national championship or being in contention with a national championship every year (at least a BCS bowl bid).

It is a tough job for a football coach and an athletic director at ND.

However, if you win big, you are a legend and they build statues of you and write books about you.

I have seen some folks reference a 4-4-4 scheduling model. That means:

--4 "Tier 1" schools like USC, Michigan, Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, Penn State, etc...

--4 "Tier 2" schools like Purdue, Boston College, Pitt, Stanford, etc...

--4 "Tier 3" schools like Duke, Navy, Vandy, SMU, Tulsa, Army, etc....

A lot of ND fans want a six home game, six road game schedule sort of like the one I've outlined above.

The "Tiers" as discussed on ND boards are based on historic standings, not recent success.

I agree with you that some games with Army, Temple, etc....are necessary to give team a chance to recover from tough games.

The biggest problem with ND's schedules are that they are front loaded.

You are right about the schedule last year. Take a look the schedules for the next three years (particularly the 2012 schedule):

2011 Football Schedule

S03 SOUTH FLORIDA
S10 @ Michigan
S17 MICHIGAN STATE
S24 @ Pittsburgh
O01 @ Purdue
O08 AIR FORCE
O22 SOUTHERN CAL
O29 NAVY
N05 @ Wake Forest
N12 vs. Maryland (FedEx)
N19 BOSTON COLLEGE
N26 @ Stanford

2012 Football Schedule

S01 vs. Navy (Ireland)
S08 PURDUE
S15 @ Michigan State
S22 MICHIGAN
O06 vs. Miami (Chi)
O13 STANFORD
O20 BYU
O27 @ Oklahoma
N03 PITTSBURGH
N10 @ Boston College
N17 WAKE FOREST
N24 @ Southern Cal

2013 Football Schedule

(not official)

S07 @ Michigan
S14 @ Purdue
S21 MICHIGAN STATE
S28 OKLAHOMA
O05 vs. Arizona State (Dal)
O19 SOUTHERN CAL
N02 NAVY
N09 @ Pittsburgh
@ Air Force
BOSTON COLLEGE
2 games TBA

Those are pretty competitive schedules, in my opinion.

Official announcement by Temple
Temple Announces Football Scheduling Agreement with Notre Dame
Owls & Fighting Irish to Play Three-Game Series

2/17/2011 3:10:34 PM

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced a new three-game football scheduling agreement with perennial powerhouse University of Notre Dame during a media conference on Thursday.

The Owls will host the Fighting Irish in Philadelphia in 2014 (Oct. 11), marking Notre Dame's first appearance at Lincoln Financial Field. Temple will visit South Bend, Ind., during the 2015 (Sept. 26) season. The third game (date has yet to be determined) will be played at Notre Dame.

“Temple is pleased to announce our new agreement with Notre Dame, one of the truly great programs in the history of college football,” said Temple Athletic Director Bill Bradshaw. “This is an exciting opportunity for Temple University, our football program, and the best sport fans anywhere-- here in Philadelphia. We are committed to playing the best programs in the country, and Notre Dame fits perfectly into our vision of bringing the best to the City of Philadelphia for our alumni and our fans.”

“We are excited to have the opportunity to play Notre Dame,” said head coach Steve Addazio, who coached at Notre Dame (1999-2001) for three seasons. “This series is good for our players, our fans, and Philadelphia. Notre Dame's football tradition and national recognition are second to none. Playing strong non-conference opponents is a part of our blueprint, and Temple fans will not be disappointed.”

Despite their extensive football histories, the schools have never met on the gridiron. Notre Dame, however, has played in the City of Philadelphia 16 times since 1928, posting a 14-1-1 record before nearly a million fans. The Fighting Irish have visited Penn five times at Franklin Field, going 4-1 against the Quakers from 1930 to 1955. Notre Dame has also played at Municipal/JFK Stadium eight times and at Veterans Stadium twice.

“It's been nearly 20 years since a Notre Dame football team has played in Philadelphia, so we're excited about the opportunity to do so, in the process playing a Temple program for the first time in our history,” Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said.

“Temple's football team is clearly a program on the rise, and it will pose great tests for us each year we play,” Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said. “We're looking forward to bringing the Fighting Irish back to Philadelphia and providing our strong East Coast fan base another opportunity to see its team in person.”

Temple football, a member of the Mid-American Conference since 2007, continues to play strong non-conference opponents. Last fall Temple announced a three-game series extension with Penn State through 2016, and a new four-game series with regional foe Rutgers through 2018.

Temple 2011 Football season tickets are on sale now for as low as $15 per game. Catch the Owls in action versus Villanova, Army, and Penn State at Lincoln Financial Field. Call the Temple Ticket Sales Office at 215-204-8499 or visit http://www.OwlsTix.com.

This is what I am talking about my Big East football fans. Notre Dame milking the teams that play all sports and then dodge playing Big East football members. When is enough enough? They could have set up a series with UofL, WVU or USF but they are scared of the speed, KICK NOTRE DAME! OR FOOTBALL MEMBERS SPLIT!

They are afraid of the speed?

So....they scheduled games with Texas, Oklahoma and Miami?

Look, I am in favor of ND playing more Big East teams, but "ducking speed" is not the reason they have not.

They play Pitt every year and play Syracuse four times (2 games in the Meadowlands; 2 games at ND), have a game with USF to start next season and just played UConn. So, ND is playing some BE teams.

UConn and Rutgers turned down ND games at Gillette and the Meadowlands.

That is their choice but ND is going to play in those venues against someone.
