Reflections on Pappy's blog
One item mentions that slowing down the game decreases your opponents chances at scoring opportunities. Obviously. But it also slows down your chances. The advantage sometimes lies in the fact that you don't have the talent to play with the other team if it gets into an athletic event, so you slow the game down as much as you can, and hope you can somehow win by doing that. In most cases, I think all you do is keep from losing by a big margin. But a three point loss counts as much as a twenty point loss. Never have liked that strategy.
I agree with his other statement that it's difficult for a one dimensional team to win consistently. That's why you play with five players, not one, two or three. Everyone has to contribute some scoring. Just being a good defensive player isn't enough. Basketball isn't a two platoon game, although sometimes it looks like it with all the offensive and defensive substitutions. Inside players have to be able to score along with perimeter players. That's why we've been so bad again this year. We can't ever seem to come up with enough of each. One year we have shooters and no inside scoring. Another year we have no outside shooting. That's where recruiting comes in. You have to find enough of both.
