Sadly we'll never know. I would have liked to have seen him stay long enough to establish whether or not he could succeed here, but it didn't work out. He was friendly to fans and a legend in the state. Shame it didn't work out for us.

True, we'll never know, but the clue that he gave me was the fact that when a team was making a run, Sidney would stand on the sidelines with his arms folded, and rarely ever call a timeout to try and stop the run. Plus the fact that he lost 24 games with a pretty good bunch that Porter won 18 games with the next year. That's a pretty good clue.

I think the facts speak for themselves in this case. Interestingly, I don't think Porter ever won more than 18 games here or at Ill State.

The year after Porter was fired his kids nearly won the valley for the next two years and were ranked in the top 25 at some point in there.

So is your point that he can't coach even though he can bring in some talent? I guess Steve did win 2 Division titles with some of Porter's players.

+1. I think we overblow Porter's qualities as a head coach a bit. Rose colored glasses and all. He was a solid coach, nothing more nothing less. Another coach almost won the MVC with his players? He almost turned UALR and Illinois State around? Horseshoes and hand grenades, which incidentally is the same argument used against Steve.

I had no problems with Porter when he was here. Once he abandoned ship, I couldn't care less. I guess my problem is I like to support our coach. If the AD chooses to make a change, I'll support the next one too.

That says it for me. (There would be a few exception to that rule, however.)

No, my point is I think he was about to do some winning.
