The Backyard Brawl thread
It's a typical Brawl, with WVU holding a 2 point lead at the half...

Huggins has looked disgusted all game. And Higgins rivals Burr as the worst official in the BE.

RE: The Backyard Brawl thread
I just wish they'd call the game consistently. But one minute something is a foul, and the next it isn't. IMO the NCAA needs to start rating officials, and putting the older officials out to pasture. Half these old farts calling games probably need new glasses, and an oxygen tank to allow them to keep up with the players...

Higgins and Burr are the worst at that. Ignore a homicide then call a touch foul.

Pitt got a gift, courtesy of Tim Higgins. The Mountaineer should have shot that SOB...

Congrats to Pitt on winning a game in which nobody knew what a foul was...
I better not see anyone wearing black and white stripes for a couple of days...

RE: The Backyard Brawl thread
A perfect example was the Turk knocks a Pitt player into the back court and then gets called for a touch foul on the drive to the basket. They should have called the mugging.

I agree, and I still don't understand how the Pitt player got away with bumping Tim Higgins without a T. That was the worst officiated game I've ever seen...

His teammate pulled him into Higgins. Higgins looked like he was going to T him up and saw he was being pulled. I was surprised too usually a brush will give you a T.

RE: The Backyard Brawl thread
His teammate pulled him away from Higgins. But nobody caused him to bump into Higgins, except himself. He got very lucky that he wasn't T'd up and thrown out of the game...

RE: The Backyard Brawl thread
What a brutal game. The refs were calling the ticky tack fouls and ignoring the really obvious fouls.

I'd say more about the officials, but it's a waste of time...

Nice win Pitt. You have a tough schedule left but you kept the two game lead on the road in a rivalry game without a top guy.

RE: The Backyard Brawl thread
Well, the WVU students didn't embarrass the university this year, so that's a win.
After out rebounding UL, UC, and SH by a combined 26 boards, WVU has looked a bit worn down the last two games. Nova won the battle of the boards by 2, and Pitt just absolutely dominated the rebounding margin tonight (+14 overall, +12 offensive). Huggins will not be pleased with that effort.

Congratulations to Pitt, gritty win on the road at a rival.
WVU is now on a bit of a skid. You have DePaul up next to break the losing streak, but after that three tough games at Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Pitt again but on the road.

I wouldn't call 2 losses to top 10 teams a skid. The majority of the nation's teams would have lost those games by a much larger margin than the Mountaineers have. It's nice to have DePaul coming up. But I wouldn't be so quick to write off WVU, if I were you...

RE: The Backyard Brawl thread
The BE is brutal.
The biggest negative about this league is beating down each other in the regular season and then you have the real war of the BE tourney. It seems to take its toll on some teams, not all, come NCAA tourney time.

I'm not writing WVU off, but back-to-back losses is a bit of a skid, and the sledding in front of you is difficult. Lose 3 of those 4 or even go 2-2 (with one of the wins being Depaul) and some could start talking about WVU as a bubble team, not a sure thing for the tourney ...

RE: The Backyard Brawl thread
I think WVU will be able to hold serve at home from here out. IMO Pitt was the toughest test, especially due to the intensity of the rivalry...
WVU's remaining schedule...
Feb 12 vs DEP
Feb 14 @ #13 SYR
Feb 19 vs #7 ND
Feb 24 @ #4 PITT
Feb 27 @RUTG
Mar 2 vs #9 CONN
Mar 5 vs #15 LOU
If the Mountaineers finish up 4-3, that gives them 10 conference wins, which should be sufficient to get WVU into the tourney field. DePaul and Rutgers should be almost automatic wins. All Huggs needs is for his team to win 2 other games, and of those other games, only the Pitt game is on the road. ND, UConn, and UofL have to come into Morgantown, and that won't be an easy task for any of those teams. If the Mountaineers can go 2-1 in those home games, while taking care of business with the bottom feeders, they should be sitting pretty...

I agree that 4-3 is certainly possible for WVU. However, while UofL "needs" to win the game, I am not counting on our road trip to Rutgers as a sure win. They haven't been able to finish but were very close with Pitt at home and @ ND recently.
