Nicco Campriani
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1 West Virginia rifle team shot a collegiate team record and defeated No. 11 Columbus State, 4704-4607, this evening at Barker Hall, in Lexington, Ky.
The Mountaineers’ (10-2, 5-1 GARC) are the first NCAA team to shoot 4700 or better this season. The aggregate score bests WVU’s previous school record of 4697 by seven shots.
WVU swept the Cougars in both guns, winning smallbore, 2336-2282, and air rifle, 2368-2325.
"One of our goals all season was to shoot 4700, and we were finally able to pass that mark," says fifth-year coach Jon Hammond. "Shooting this score today takes some weight off our shoulders. I don't know how this will effect the rest of the season, but today was a great day. Hopefully this will lead to even better scores."
Senior Nicco Campriani shot a perfect 600 (100-100-100-100-100-100) air rifle for the second time in three matches. The school record score also is a world record, though the Florence, Italy, native will not receive credit because he did not shoot the mark at an international competition.
Campriani finished first overall with a school-record aggregate score of 1192. He also won smallbore with a season-high score of 592 (199 prone, 197 standing, 191 kneeling).
Sophomore Petra Zublasing finished second overall with a season-high score of 1184. Junior Justin Pentz shot a combined score of 1166 and finished in third place.
Jon Hall paced the Cougars with a score of 1163.
Zublasing finished behind Campriani in both guns, shooting a season-high 588 smallbore and 596 air rifle.
Pentz shot a personal-best 590 air rifle and finished in a third-place tie with Hall. Senior Andy Lamson finished in fifth place with a score of 587, while junior Michael Kulbacki shot 586 and place sixth.
The Mountaineers took the top seven smallbore spots, with senior Kyle Smith finishing in third place with a score of 580. Lamson and classmate Tommy Santelli shot 577 and tied for fourth place, while Pentz shot 576 for sixth place and senior Brandi Eskew finished in seventh place with a score of 574.
Today was the first-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and the Cougars.
The Mountaineers close out their regular-season with an NCAA qualifying match against No. 9 Nebraska on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 8 a.m., at the WVU Rifle Range. WVU outshot the Cornhuskers, 4656-4592, on Nov. 21.

Who's ranked #1?
BTW, has TCU had a shooter shoot a perfect score yet? WVU's Nicco Campriani has 2 perfect 600 scores in his last 3 matches...

I doubt it. I'm sure bit will have exact numbers, but I think there are only 10-20 schools with a rifle team.

RE: WVU Rifle team sets collegiate record
No perfect scores for TCU this year, but still not sure how WVU is ranked #1 (I am going to assume it is on avg score) considering they lost head-to-head to the other two teams who are considered strong title contenders (Kentucky and TCU).
Of course TCUs recruiting pool is also cut in half (if not more) because we are a all female program. The only all female rifle team to win a NCAA title.

I'm not sure of the exact number of schools that have rifle teams. But the majority of 'em are GARC members...

RE: WVU Rifle team sets collegiate record
I know this may sound rather dumb, but are these competitions just for rifles, and if so, what rounds are they firing? Are there any hand gun competitions?

Great job West Virginia.
What really shocked me in that article was reading the words Columbus State. Didn't know they even did sports.

Doesn't the NCAA require 40 teams before it's an officially sanctioned sport? Equestrian only has 23 or so, which is why TCU's national title in that sport from 2008 isn't "official."

I don't know the exact rules, but I am pretty sure you can break that minimum and then dip back under and still keep NCAA championship status. NCAA has sponsored the rifle title for 31 years now I think.
I want to say the men's gymnastics is down to 20 some D1 teams now, and maintain their official NCAA championship.
