http://www.mlive.com/opinion/kalamazoo/i...h_emp.html

An interesting article written by some local talent.

Interesting perspective, IMO, between writer #1 and #2's take on sports and entertainment.

I am a coach and a teacher. At my school because of what my staff does in the off season 3 or 4 kids graduate that would not have without sports. We do grades every Thursday for every kid in the program. We have also had a top ten gpa since I have came back as coach. We have also had a 100 percent graduation rate.

Would be like me saying I don't think we need art or band. I don't know **** about it so I stay out of it.

On a collegiate level? Absolutely. On the high school level (and below)? Absolutely not.

As Kimbo said, there are many kids who wouldn't graduate nor give two chits about their grades if it wasn't a condition for participating in athletics. Aside from the kids who wouldn't care about school in the first place, it's also an avenue to keep kids busy and find a hobby and/or passion. And on top of that, it's an opportunity to learn life lessons.

#1 obviously gets it and has a good head on her shoulders. #2 is clearly bitter towards "jocks" and reeks of insecurity. I find it hilarious he correlates the decline of the US in education with the promotion of a "sports first" culture. I also thought I knew everything when I was 18.

I'd also like for him to prove it only takes D's to play sports at Hartford. When I was in HS in GR 96-2000, you had to have at least 2.0 to play sports.
