Question for MercerFan
What is your opinion on state of program. I fully believe in giving a coach 4 years minimum to let him get own recruiting class and recruit to his style of play.
My real question for you, as I saw in a previous post(pre-injuries), you thought the team could make a magical run in tourney again. So my question is.....is it better to have tourney success and still not make the NCAA and underachieve or have better teams, better record and not have tourney success.
We had a lot of talent the previous two years and we went one game over .500 two years ago. Lost in all the joy and excitement of the A-Sun tourney we still finished under .500 on the year with a top 3 talent team in the league. We just started playing like we should in the tourney.
Now this team looks better at home than the road, but the talent is low.
Mills, Mark Hall, and Jake Gallon are previous coach recruits. Moore and Jeff Smith are starter caliber players in this league, but not all conference level. Langston Hall is going to be a stud in this league. Best recruit by Hoffman yet. Kusnyer was a perfect fit as a role player in this league which was a Hoffman recruit. But besides that, in 3 years of recruiting classes, Hoffman hasn't shown a lot besides a lot of turnover with the recruits. In 3 years, if he had recruited one all conference player or maybe even 2 during that span, we wouldn't be in a rebuilding phase this year. (not saying we would win the league, but we would be a little higher).
Just getting your thoughts and your outlook. You like to look on the positive side of things. Show me the light on this. I don't see much in the bank for next year either.

RE: Question for MercerFan
My overall opinion of the program is that we're better with Hoffman so far, but still far from where we need to be.
There's no arguing that overall records have not been good so far with Hoffman. That's a big negative.
On the positive side:
-attendance is up
-MUCH MUCH better scheduling of home games (especially compared to other ASUN schools).
-Actually made the ASun tournament finals (yes sounds sad to say, but former staff did not do that in 11 seasons.) Former coaching had 1 ASUN Tournament win from 2003-2008 (versus a #8 seed). Hoffman has more than that in his first two years.
Next year Hoffman has a team that is all his recruits. I'm with you that 4 years is the absolute minimum you get in this situation. Next year is a "prove it" year for players and coaches. They are all there with each other by free will. No one on that court thought they would be playing for a different coach.
Until then the program should be feeling a sense of urgency. I see the progress, I see a better product on the floor. I don't know what else to say right now.
To answer your 'real question': It's 100% of the time better to have a good team with a good overall record and mess up the tournament versus a magical run that falls short. I want a team that can win, not be the perennial underdog that wins occasionally.

RE: Question for MercerFan
I really think the last string of games is a great resume for Coach Hoffman. After losing 2 starters and having their back to the wall he has coached the team into 9 wins out of 11 games. I believe Hoffman is figuring out how to win in the A-Sun and the players are working really well together. I see a desire to win in these players and staff. I really believe they play for each other and genuinely just want to win.
